I SAW THE LIGHT

3 out of 5 stars

His addictions & love for women is all we get in this Hank biopic, forgetting to show his genius at work. But its saving grace is the terrific Hiddleston, whom wears pain &heartache under his cowboy hat & unleashes it in his songs.

EYE IN THE SKY

4 out of 5 stars

Full of superb performances, this soul searching political war thriller is skillfully challenging & fraught; no easy answers are offered in deconstructing the delicacy of mortality after inflaming deadly decisions are carried out.

THE JUNGLE BOOK (2016)

4 out of 5 stars

Favreau brings this classic adventure to extraordinary life w/a stellar young Sethi as Mowgli & an excellent voice cast to follow him. Engulfed in the danger while maintaining humor & good-vibes, it’s a marvel to behold.

THE HUNTSMAN: WINTERS WAR

1.5 out of 5 stars

Any intrigue or incitation is bashed out of this avoidable sequel that somehow gathered up an unbelievable cast, but never sees the use of capitalizing on their talents.

HUSH

3 out of 5 stars

Even when there’re glimpses of stupidity, this home invasion thriller stays entirely rattling & energized. A victim that can’t hear nor speak makes the silence that much more worrisome.

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL

4.5 out of 5 stars

Intriguing mysteries of the unknown are the mainspring of this profound, spellbinding supernatural film. Nichols has orchestrated an ingenious, moving story about belief & search for salvation. Along w/ remarkable performances, it’s the bond between father & son that speaks the highest volume.

BORN TO BE BLUE

3.5 out of 5 stars

Hawke is mesmerizing as jazz legend Chet Baker in a stylishly smooth, innovatory biopic of a man deep in his passion for music, addiction & love; each one trying to devour the other in a traumatic, vicious cycle.

DEMOLITION

2.5 out of 5 stars

Gyllenhaal is cracking at losing his shit after losing his wife in a film showing a mercilessly truthful way someone chooses to handle grief. Regrettably, the rest of it lags w/ a contriving, confused narrative.

THE INVITATION

4.5 out of 5 stars

This remarkable tension-filled film is cleverly mastered by walking a thin line between skepticism & paranoia. The sweltering eeriness & dread becomes almost unbearable in the most vital way possible. A superior psychological treat.

CRIMINAL

1.5 out of 5 stars

Costner gives a valiant effort, but this mind-swapping movie is beyond brainless & its outdated action sequences & dialogue don’t help; I’m absolutely stunned on how it attracted such a first-class cast.
