SEC Power Rankings: Week 10

This week’s Power Rankings are going to start a little bit differently. It’s going to be something I’m not fond of doing, especially on an article about college football.

You see, I have to apologize.

So, Mississippi State, this is my formal apology. I incorrectly stated that you wouldn’t win any more games this season. I also hinted at you being demolished by Texas A&M. I was wrong. Please accept my apology Coach Mullen and Co.

Man, am I glad that’s over (both the apology and the election). Let’s dig into some other topics. For instance, does anyone want to win the SEC East? The race for the East title could actually end in a six way tie. Seriously. That’s a thing. They would have to go through multiple tie breakers, and South Carolina would win because Will Muschamp would defeat Butch Jones in an Indian Leg Wrestling Death Match. I think.

Anyway, let’s go to the rankings!

1. Alabama – Same story. Sure it was only 10-0, but that game could have lasted for 12 quarters and LSU still wouldn’t have scored. The Alabama defense stifled Leonard Fournette again, and made the Tigers’ offense look lost. Jalen Hurts continues to be a dynamic player, and the Tide might not be undefeated without him. Still, Alabama is the best in the land, and the gap is getting wider. The Tide welcomes Mississippi State this weekend.

2. Auburn – Sometimes you have to steal a win, which is exactly what Auburn did this weekend. The Tigers couldn’t put the Commodores away until late, and never got going on offense until the second half. This trap game could prove beneficial for Auburn, who likely won’t overlook another opponent all season. Auburn travels to Georgia this weekend.

3. LSU – The Tigers lost, but they move up a spot this week for a few reasons. A combination of A&M losing and LSU playing Alabama tough into the fourth quarter warrants a rise in the rankings. The defense managed to keep Alabama’s offense on its heels for most of the game, putting Hurts on the ground at every opportunity. LSU’s offense, however, never had a prayer of scoring. Now with two conference losses, the West is all but lost. LSU travels to Arkansas.

4. Texas A&M – Remember when I said that the Aggies didn’t belong at #4 in the country? Turns out, I was right. In what might be the biggest upset in the SEC all season, the Aggies fell to Mississippi State. To make matters worse, A&M lost Trevor Knight for the season to a shoulder injury and Myles Garrett is still healing. With two conference losses late, the West might be lost for the Aggies, too. Texas A&M hosts Ole Miss this weekend.

5. Arkansas – What in the world, Arkansas? What am I supposed to do with a team that is this inconsistent? The Razorbacks put a beating on the #10-ranked Florida Gators. While the Gators were severely overrated, it was still an impressive showing from Arkansas. They dominated every aspect of the game while becoming bowl eligible. They have a top 25 showdown with LSU this weekend.

6. Tennessee – What’s the easiest way to get back on track? Beat the hell out of an inferior opponent. In the first game without Jalen Hurd, the Vols dominated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (which hurt my heart to see my alma mater ragdolled like that). Tennessee is still in the race for the East, and will need to mark off some wins in the next several weeks. The first step is the weekend against Kentucky.

7. South Carolina – Yeah, you read that correctly. Is anyone playing better than the Gamecocks in the SEC East? With three wins in a row, Will Muschamp is one win away from bowl eligibility in his first season. More importantly, South Carolina is in the hunt for Atlanta. Muschamp leads South Carolina down to his old stomping ground at Florida this weekend.

(Editor’s note: I told you guys South Carolina wasn’t going to be the 3-loss team everyone was predicting them to be. -SKBigNatural)

8. Georgia – It took a last second field goal, but the Bulldogs survived against Kentucky. Georgia is still behind in the East race, but they’re one game away from a bowl game in Kirby Smart’s first season. Both offense and defense continues to struggle, and they’ll need to step it up this weekend against Auburn.

9. Ole Miss – A win against Georgia Southern may have never been so costly. With only a 10-point win, the Rebels lost Chad Kelly for the season to an ACL tear. With only four wins, Ole Miss is running the risk of missing out on a bowl this season. Would it surprise anyone to hear Hugh Freeze announce a self imposed bowl ban this week? Ole Miss travels to A&M this weekend.

10. Florida – What a collapse from the Gators. After getting demolished by Arkansas, Florida has fallen out of the top 25. Leaning on a solid defense only lasts so long, and with an ineffective offense, the Gators could continue to struggle. That loss to Arkansas put a big dent in Florida’s race for the East. They welcome South Carolina in a must win game.

11. Kentucky – Now we’re into three-way tie territory. Wasn’t it fun for Kentucky while it lasted though? The Wildcats lost a close game to Georgia to end the winning streak. Fun fact: a win over Georgia would have put the Cats in first place in the East. Wouldn’t that have been awesome? Now Kentucky needs to win out to get to Atlanta. They’ll need to start by pulling a big upset over Tennesee.

11. Vanderbilt – Another team that lost a close one, this time to Auburn. Zach Cunningham continues to be one of the best linebackers in the country and gave Auburn fits all day. The Commodores would be a force in the East if they could score points. Until then, Vandy will still struggle to find wins. They head to Missouri in hopes to find a win toward bowl eligibility.

11. Mississippi State – Apparently, Dan Mullen and the Bulldogs read my articles. They seemed to take last week personally. Mississippi State played their best game of the season and took down the #4 team in the country. I’ll still need to see more from the Bulldogs for them to move into the top 10. For now, they move closer to bowl eligibility. They travel to Alabama this weekend.

14. Missouri – Dumpster fire? How about a derailed train this week?
