We are almost halfway through the 2017 season, and the calendar has finally brought the series to the East Coast venues.  This means we can finally start sizing up the 250 East riders, and see how they rate compared to the West.

I just want to throw a quick “you go boy!!” to Benny Bloss, who looks to be a giant among hobbits, but still finds a way to make the smaller bike competitive.  All night, Bloss showed blistering speed through the whoop section, but unfortunately found himself out of the race with a dislocated shoulder.  I see a bright racing future for this guy, especially if he gets back on a 450.

So far, the tracks out West have been fast and flowing, but the track from this past weekend in Minneapolis looked more like an expanded Arenacross to me.  Very one-lined, riders found themselves stuck behind each other all night, only able to pass by using very aggressive techniques.

Some of the riders even seemed to be a little vocal about the effort put into the track build going into the night show:

Regardless of how anyone feels about the track, all of the riders had to deal with it…and each other.  Lappers this season seem to be caught off guard more than usual, and have held several front runners up on multiple occasion.  But no surprise to see Malcom Stewart to crashing himself into one.  I really hope he can stay on two wheels and get a decent result at least one time this year.

Dean Wilson appears to be getting acclimated to his new factory Husqvarna ride, and from what I can tell, Jason Anderson must’ve given him his best secret on how to go fast:  let your jersey come un-tucked.  Seriously, as soon as he joined Anderson in the pits, both riders fly around the track with their jersey flapping around.  Can’t be coincidence.

Overall, this may have been the least exciting race of 2017 thus far, but not to say the battles weren’t intense.  The 450 championship is becoming a little more into focus, and it really looks to be an Eli Tomac vs. Ryan Dungey battle.  Minneapolis may have been Ryan’s hometown race, but the “home-field” advantage and his very….very purple riding weren’t enough to keep him ahead of Tomac.  The season continues down South to Hotlanta, where your’s truly will be on site to provide a bird’s eye view of the action.
