It's Time to Bring "Whoomp! There It Is" Back Into the Pro Wrestling Lexicon

Man, 1993 – what a year. Monday Night Raw first came on the air. Bill Clinton took office. Unforgiven won Best Picture. No more Czechoslovakia. The Power Rangers debuted. I was a meager seven year old…barely even remember 1993, but it was a doozy nonetheless.

1993 was also a prime year for Hasbro WWF action figures. The series with The Mountie, Virgil, Warlord, Skinner, “The Model” Rick Martel, and I.R.S. was something to behold. It only got better later in the year, when Ric Flair, Papa Shango, The Berzerker, Kamala, Razor Ramon, and Shawn Michaels hit shelves. That was a wrestling figure heyday of sorts. Some really classic work being done in between the giant immovable LJN molds and Jakks Pacific’s weird “bone-crunching” toys.

But, probably the biggest most important thing to happen in 1993 was iconic rap duo, Tag Team, releasing 90s hip-hop anthem, “Whoomp! (There It Is).” Really, it was the perfect tune to exemplify the spirit of 1993.

There’s a party over here
A party over there
Wave your hands in the air
Shake your derriere
These three words when you’re gettin’ busy
Whoomp there it is

That was all of us in 1993. That was America.

I would like to know what exactly what ‘gettin’ busy’ meant in 1993. As a seven year old, I didn’t know, so I can’t recall. If it meant what it means today, that’s hysterical. I mean, can you imagine? Just laying the D, and then audibly shouting, “Whoomp! There it is!”

I haven’t been single in nearly six years, but I’m going to reach out to some of my single friends and suggest this as a sex catchphrase. Just to see what happens. We all know that the number one rule of being single is to have a solid sex catchphrase at the ready.

Enough reminiscing, though. Let’s fast forward to 2017. WWE fans love “hijacking” shows, so to speak. I mean, part of the fun of going to a wrestling show is chanting all the fun things, amiright?!?!

So, several months ago, I was sitting back enjoying some 1993 WWF programming. Men on a Mission come out, and I’m reminded of the old “Whoomp! There It Is!” chants.

There’s hours more of these little nuggets on the WWE Network. Basically, any pay-per-view from 1993 to halfway through 1994 is loaded with them, but I think you guys get the point.

So, what I propose to wrestling fans everywhere: let’s bring this wonderful chant back. Let’s use it in big moments. Let’s use it after impactful moves. It could serve as both the new “YES!” chant. It could be an upgrade over “HO-LY SHIT! HO-LY SHIT!” We can use it in the same context as “You de-serve it!” as well if we want to!

It means so many things to so many different people. We can’t just let “Whoomp! There It Is!” die where it did.

I promise to do my part to kickstart this movement. Of course, I only go to shows at the Gladeville Community Center right now….where I might be thrown out for this…but if that’s the cross I need to bear, I will bear it. Hopefully, as this site continues to grow, I’ll have more opportunities (read: money) to attend more shows in the region and really try to get this movement to the WWE stage.

Let’s achieve this together. Do the right thing, wrestling fans. #AlwaysDoGood.

And, of course, for old time’s sake…
