I Guess It’s Time to Catch up on the NHL

Man, Wrestlemania has passed. March Madness is over. MLB Opening Day was a few days ago. The Super Bowl has long since ended, and the College Football Playoff is but a distant memory. But, sports fans – rest easy. There’s always the good ol’ NHL to turn to.

Hockey season is….oh shit….wait….it’s already almost time for the Stanley Cup playoffs. WTF? Did I blink and miss the entire season? Damn, I have some catching up to do. What have I missed?

1) It’s the Caps’ year, again, but for real this time – 114 points, 53 wins, Washington is absolutely rolling to the Presidents Trophy, but as is the case with this team, it’s about what they do in the postseason. This team looks pretty good from what I’ve read, because I’m just now realizing hockey season is going on and definitely haven’t watched a game all year.

2) Ovi DGAF about the NHL’s rules, he’s going to the Olympics if he wants to – yeah, so apparently the NHL has said they aren’t participating in the Olympics anymore. Too bad Mother Russia makes the calls for Alex Ovechkin, and if he wants to go play for his country, you could wipe a monkey’s ass with what the NHL says. That’s paraphrasing The Rock, of course.

3) Chicago is in control of the West – Seriously, fuck the Blackhawks so hard. This is coming from a guy who usually appreciates greatness. I love LeBron James. I’m an admirer of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. I’m absolutely in love with a Yankees fan. It’s hard for me not to be drawn in to elite athletes doing amazing things. Still, there’s something about the Blackhawks and their fans that are just…..greasy.

4) Colorado is comically, historically bad – Because of my talks with friend of the site, R-Hog, I’ve come to appreciate just how truly bad the Avalanche really are. 21 wins, 45 points in 78 games. Of all the things to harp on, the terrible Avs seem to come up every day. The result is always uproarious laughter.

5) Canada is coming back for the Cup – America, y’all done pissed off Canada winning all those Stanley Cups. Montreal, Edmonton, and Calgary are officially in the playoffs, with Ottawa and Toronto still in the hunt.

6) They are still keeping track of plus/minus – This may not be shocking to anyone else, but it is to me. Why don’t they start keeping track of goals scored in white jerseys? It may be just as useful.

7) Connor McDavid has emerged as a Hart Trophy contender – wait, what? I thought he was still “figuring it out,” but nope – I guess that’s what I get for pretty well tuning out for the entirety of the season. Really, anyone but fucking Patrick Kane.

8) Sergei Bobrovsky is still ridiculous – Columbus won 16 in a row at one point during the season? Damn…the Blue Jackets? The laughable BJs? You mean to tell me they’re actually good? And, their goalie is arguably the best in the league? Waaaaaat

9) Local flavor: the Predators are in the playoffs – man, the hype train was borderline out of control before the season started, and Nashville failed to live up to it. Still, happy to see ’em recover and get in. Can’t really call this the best team they’ve had. They’ve been a pretty average team. That’ll probably be exposed if they end up drawing Chicago in the first round.

10) Speaking of the Preds, where did Viktor Arvidsson come from? I remember watching the playoff push last season and, like a lot of other Preds fans, thought, “man – Arvidsson deserves more playing time.” Well, looks like he’s got it and amassed 57 points (3rd on the team) and 29 goals (2nd on the team). What ever happened to that P.K. Subban guy (hehe)?

I need to watch more hockey. Can’t wait for the playoffs.
