Tennessee Titans First Round Options: Corey Davis

The 2017 NFL Draft takes place April 27-29 this year, and as it stands, the Tennessee Titans have two first round draft picks. General manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Mularkey currently hold the 5th overall selection and the 18th overall selection. Over the next few weeks, your boy Big Natural will be taking a look at some of the prospects rumored to be tied to or make sense for the Titans.

Last week, rumors started swirling that the Titans are dead set on either CB Marshon Lattimore or WR Mike Williams should they get stuck with the fifth overall selection in a couple weeks. Now, whether you buy into that or not is an entirely separate issue. I find it convenient that the two names mentioned happen to be linked to teams behind the Titans in the draft order. Would the Jets, Bills, or Browns be willing to trade up for either of these guys? Who knows? But, there’s certainly something in it for the wheelin’ and dealin’ Robinson to have these teams thinking the Titans are going a certain way.

It’s all one big rumor mill, for sure. And, I have to acknowledge that it’s dangerous business believing any rumor that comes out of any NFL camp this time of year.

The eye test, in my opinion, suggests that the Titans aren’t in as dire need of a wide receiver as the fans think they are. For those keeping up with the site, I apologize, I know you guys are thinking I’m sounding like a broken record about this. I just don’t see the Titans spending a first round pick on a receiver this year. It’s a deep class – they can get a good one in the middle of the draft. Plus, Rishard Matthews did an admirable job in 2016. Tajae Sharpe has another year under his belt. They pick up a couple of guys to compete in the later rounds, maybe an OJ Howard/David Njoku, and they’ll be fine.

But, for the sake of argument and covering all of our bases here. I’m going to include Western Michigan wide receiver Corey Davis in this column. I’ve seen his name pop up numerous times on Titans Facebook/Twitter as a guy the fans are interested in. If the team does end up using one of its first rounders on a receiver, he could very well be the pick.

Projected to go in the back half of the first round, some consider Davis to be the best receiver in this year’s draft class. That would make him a steal should he fall to the Titans at #18, no? While I’m more of a fan of Williams, I can see the argument for Davis. Both possess good hands, strong control of their bodies, and look like viable options in the red zone.

I’d consider Williams the more polished project at this point, but Davis has the edge in shiftiness and his ability to get down the field and draw coverage his way. Davis has a history of injuries, so his durability remains his biggest question mark.

But, the former Bronco has one strong trait that makes him a good fit with the Titans. The guy is the prototypical Jon Robinson type. He’s had a productive college career, plays gritty, is tough, runs good routes and can block with the best of ’em. Davis is as dependable a guy as you will find in this draft, and so far, those seem to be the type of guys that Robinson and Mularkey covet.

While I don’t see the need for a first-round receiver, it could happen. If it doesn’t happen in the top-10, Davis could very well be the pick at #18. Crazier things have happened.
