Yep, seems about time for a Nick Saban contract extension. Alabama Crimson Tide fans were starting to get a little concerned about the long term future of the program. Rumors have been swirling about Saban heading to the University of Texas, or to the NFL. But, news is breaking this morning that he’s staying put in Tuscaloosa.
Courtesy of College Football Talk:
The university has announced that Saban has agreed to an eight-year contract extension that has him signed through the 2024 season. In October of that year, Saban will turn 73 years old.
In addition to the additional years — his old contract, last adjusted in 2014, was set to run through 2021 — Saban will receive a significant financial bump. Last year, Saban made $6.9 million; this year, he’ll pull in a cool $11.125 million for the 2017 season alone, with $4 million of that compensation coming in the form of a signing bonus. Per the university’s release, “[t]here will [also]… be an additional $4 million spread out through the 2020 (10 percent), 2021 (10 percent) and 2022 (80 percent) years of the contract” should Saban remain at the school and hasn’t retired or moved on.
All told, the eight-year deal would pay Saban a total of just north of $65 million, an average of just over $8.1 million annually. That total doesn’t include performance bonuses, either.
His base salary for each year of the deal will be $6.75 million
Can’t wait for the “why are we paying so much money to coaches and players?” crowd to show up for this one. Just know that I bask in your misery, confusion, and refusal to accept that sports rake in billions of dollars each year. No one can stop the sports machine because average citizens keep pouring money into it. You want that to change? Convince millions of people to stop watching sports, quit buying tickets to games, quit buying merchandise, etc. etc. etc.
Otherwise, you’re just going to keep being flabbergasted when news break that a fucking football coach is making $11.5 MILLION IN ONE YEAR. I love it. But, that’s just the instigator in me.
If anyone is worthy of being the highest paid coach in sports, it’s Saban. His unrivaled success in such a relatively short amount of time already places him in the historically elite echelon of coaches. As an Alabama fan, of course I love it. Now, I know it won’t last forever, and a time will come when Auburn, Tennessee, and LSU are repeatedly beating our asses year in and year out. That’s just the cyclical nature of college football – I will be willing and ready to take my ass-beating like a man. But, for now, I’m going to enjoy the shit show that is Twitter:
Alabama football coach Nick Saban will make more than 92 TIMES what Alabama’s governor Kay Ivey will make this year.
Love it – fuck your governor! Pay the football coach 92 TIMES HIS SALARY!!!
Nick Saban’s $11.25 million salary makes him, by far, the highest paid government employee in America. Federal, state, or local.
Nick Saban IS the government.
