Leonard Fournette Is the Favorite to Win NFL Rookie of the Year

Props to Mickey Ryan for doing the Lord’s work – posting betting odds on NFL’s Rookie of the Year honors so I don’t have to do any damn research. Just find it in my Twitter feed without even trying. Feeding the addiction that degenerates like me have.

It’s a pretty interesting list, though. Should we be surprised that Leonard Fournette is the favorite? Probably not. My initial thoughts were, “no way am I going Fournette over Christian McCaffrey.” McCaffrey is landing in a much stabler situation and possesses a broader skill set. The kid can run, catch, throw, return, anything you need him to. Plus, he has the added bonus of playing behind a better offensive line and alongside a better quarterback.

Blake Bortles essentially played 2016 on his back. Sure, the Jaguars drafted Cam Robinson in the second round, but he slipped to the second round because of concerns over his ability. He’s not going to fix that shoddy offensive line. Now, does that mean Fournette is going to suck? No, of course not. I just think McCaffrey is in the better position to succeed right away. If I were a betting man, I’d take that 5/1.

Now, another interesting tidbit. Mitchell Trubisky was the first quarterback selected in the draft, no? Yet, Deshaun Watson and DeShone Kizer have better odds to win the award. Yeesh. What have the Bears gotten themselves into?

I don’t think Corey Davis is going to post the numbers it takes to win this award. He’s playing in a run-first offense, so think 50-60 receptions, 700 yards, and five touchdowns. The rest of the pool would have to play pretty poorly for that to win the award. Mike Williams is an interesting selection because of his fit in Los Angeles (almost typed San Diego lolololololol).

If I’m gambling on long shots, though, I think I’d have to give Evan Engram and that 25/1 a long hard look. Engram happens to be exactly what the Giants offense was lacking in 2016, he’s explosive, surrounded with talent, and has a Hall of Fame quarterback throwing to him. He could be a good high-risk, high-reward bet here.

*sigh* Is it football season yet?
