WWE Money in the Bank Results and Match Ratings

WWE’s Money in the Bank took place live in St. Louis, Missouri. With only five matches on the main card heading into the show, I was concerned about the quality the blue brand could put out. But, it’s Money in the Bank! It’s one of the most exciting shows of the year – you just never know! Let’s break it down.

Kickoff Show: The Hype Bros def. The Colons – Some rumors rumbling around the interwebs this week that Zack Ryder might turn heel in this spot, but it didn’t happen. Mojo Rawley is much-improved, and the crowd seems to be responding well. I’m a fan of both of these teams, so this match was pretty entertaining. I’d like to see The Hype Bros get a real run here before the inevitable heel turn (by either man). Rating: 6.5/10.

Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match: Carmella def. Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Natalya, and Tamina – Hate to say it, but this match fell flat a bit. Some nice physical spots, but the ladies just didn’t get enough time. It never felt like they got into a good rhythm. Whether you loved the ending or hated it, it got nuclear heat on Carmella, so mission: accomplished. We can debate whether or not the first Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match should’ve finished straight up or not, but it doesn’t do much to change what actually happened. It didn’t live up to the hype. Rating: 6/10

Smackdown Tag Team Championship: The New Day def. The Usos (via countout) – Wow, what a fun, energetic match. Several near-falls raised the excitement level. These two teams have excellent chemistry together, and hopefully we’ll get more of a straight up match between the two in the future. I was thinking, “this is an eight” for the better part of the match, but the botched Big Ending, odd three count that wasn’t a three count, and the count out finish mean docked points in my book. Rating: 7/10

Shaq commercial – Rating: 10/10. Beautiful.

Smackdown Women’s Championship: Naomi def. Lana – Well, this match was actually a pleasant surprise. Shocked to see them get longer than a few moments. Lana looked a little slow, but not too sloppy….even WORKED A LIMB. WHAT?! But, you know…still is what it is. Carmella teases cashing in her newly won Money in the Bank briefcase, but thinks better of it. Rating: 4/10 – not a blatant disaster, but nothing special either.

Fashion Files: Give me all the damn Fashion Files….ever. Rating: 10/10.

Mike & Maria Kanellis debut – fun introduction, audience knew who they were…nothing more. We’ll see how this goes.

WWE Championship: Jinder Mahal def. Randy Orton – I loved the psychology of this match – Mahal “playing tribute” to the legends at ringside and working the leg/knee of Orton. But, they lose points for a couple of reason. For one, Orton looked gassed halfway through the match. We’ve talked about his tendency to phone it in sometimes – don’t think that’s necessarily the case here, but he just looked physically tired. Second, I’m pretty sure they ended their first encounter THE EXACT SAME WAY. Orton roughs up The Singh Brothers and walks right into Orton’s finish. That said, decent showing that felt like a good old-fashioned title match. Rating: 7/10.

Another Shaq commercial – Rating: 10/10. Got damn electric.

Breezango def. The Ascension – Well, this was a fun way to get the most entertaining tag team in the WWE (@ me, I dare you) on the show, but the match was incredibly inconsequential. That said, it did its job – filler in between the WWE Championship match and our main event, the Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Rating: 5/10.

Money in the Bank Ladder Match: Baron Corbin def. Shinsuke Nakamura, Kevin Owens, A.J. Styles, Sami Zayn, and Dolph Ziggler – Instant classic. I’ve seen a few people on Twitter who were unhappy with it, and I really have no idea how you couldn’t have enjoyed this match. It had everything – storytelling with Nakamura selling the early injury, high spots left and right, and a dramatic, pivotal moment in the match when Nakamura and Styles squared off for the first time in a WWE ring. Bravo, gentlemen. An emotional rollercoaster.

My one nitpick…I have to say, man…it is 2017. Why are wrestlers still getting distracted by entrance music? And, if Corbin is about to climb the ladder, why wouldn’t Nakamura try and show some urgency getting into the ring? Corbin should have immediately started climbing. Instead, he did the exact opposite. He actually threw the ladder of the ring. That minor nitpick aside, this was one of the best Money in the Bank Ladder Matches of all time. Rating: 8.5/10.

Overall rating: 6.5/10 – above average, enjoyable show. It finally feels like the post-Wrestlemania lull is over and we’re gearing up for Summerslam on the blue brand.
