Michael Phelps Racing a Great White Shark Is Dumb

The Olympic swimming legend is going to do the opposite though, as Discovery Channel announced that Phelps will be racing a shark as part of the network’s annual “Shark Week” on July 23.

“They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds. But he has one competition left to win. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark – the race is on!

So dumb. SO SO SO SO SO DUMB. And, listen – this is usually coming from a guy who doesn’t like to rain on anyone’s parade. The reason people do these promotional stunts is because they work! And, I’m sure there’s someone out there who really thinks Phelps has a shot against a great white shark….one of the greatest predators in the history of predators…who also happens to reside in the ocean.

I like the old gimmicky promotion tactics. Like that fat guy who dressed up as the tooth fairy in the cash advance loan company commercials. I laughed. I mean, I didn’t go take out a scammy loan, but you get it. I’m not going to hate on anyone trying to hustle and get their product out to the masses. Even if it is a shitty product.

But, as a responsible journalist, I just have an obligation to educate the people – because I hate seeing people disappointed. If you think this is going to be an actual competition, you will be disappointed.

I don’t know what else to say – I can’t believe I’m actually seeing people debating this.

I think it’s only fair that this race takes place in the same tank. That’s the only way Phelps stands a chance – if that panicked, “life is flashing before my eyes” strength kicks in and Phelps is literally swimming for his life. Even then, I’m pretty sure we’d just see a shark eat perhaps our country’s most decorated athlete on live television. But, let’s not act like people wouldn’t watch that, either. People is savages.

I wonder if Vegas is making odds on this. This would be one of those cases where I’d imagine you’d have to put down $5,000,000 just to win $1. But, hey – what do I know? Maybe Phelps has a solid game plan.
