The United States Is Thinking About Putting Together a Real Life Guardians of the Galaxy

It’s 2017. The times they are a changing, according to Bob Dylan, anyway. New threats to our security are emerging every day. Thankfully, the fine men and women of the United States government that never does anything wrong are already thinking of new ways to protect us.

A Congressional committee is proposing that the US armed forces add a new military branch that would, quite literally, send soldiers out of this world.

I’m as American as they come, don’t get me wrong. But, I tend to think Marvel fever is sweeping over our government. Superhero movies have dominated every Summer for the last decade. So, you can’t really blame them. They probably saw The Avengers and thought, “guys, we need a plan in case some Loki-looking motherfucker brings an alien army to Earth.” Now, a few years later, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 is just hammering that home. “Guys – there’s a literal breathing, living planet out there. What good is a tank going to do in space?”

Boom – here we are. So, in a way, we have the genius of Stan Lee to thank for this. I’ve always loved movies with a message, and it seems the Marvel Cinematic Universe has one giant message: get the fuck up into space before the aliens come. It’s working.

Among the Space Corps’ official duties, as established in the bill, would be “providing combat-ready space forces that enable the commanders of the combatant commands to fight and win wars.”

Okay, guys – it’s clear there’s still some work to do. But, this idea is still in its infancy, so I’m willing to give this vague, generic job description a pass. At least you’re trying. But, you could’ve just gone with “get space forces ready and then win,” and it would’ve been just as descriptive.

Senior Air Force officials see the proposed corps as an unnecessary change in the force’s existing space efforts. (The Space Corps wouldn’t exactly be boldly going where no man has gone before. The Air Force Space Command has been working toward that since 1982.)

But – and this is the big question – could the Air Force Space Command stop Thanos? I have a feeling if the Air Force Space Command was ready to handle Thanos, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. #BeBetter.
