NFL Power Rankings: Week 2

Well, shit – we’re a bunch of football writers, so I guess we have to get in on the ‘NFL Power Rankings’ action. So, here we are. Your boy “Big Natural” is a major advocate of the Bill Parcells school of thinking in that ‘you are what your record says you are.’

With that in mind, my power rankings are going to be based on the body of work. I don’t care what you were supposed to do before the season started. Nor do I care what you could do in a potential matchup. I’m placing an emphasis on what teams have actually done.

NFL Power Rankings: Week 2

1. Kansas City Chiefs (2-0) – The Chiefs held off a gutsy, improved Eagles squad on Sunday as the Chiefs offense continues to roll behind Alex Smith and Kareem Hunt. Andy Reid’s squad travels to Los Angeles to face the Chargers this week. I can’t imagine much

2. Oakland Raiders (2-0) – The Raiders look like they have the best offense in football right now, and if Marshawn Lynch keeps playing this way, they’re better for it. This team has its eyes on a Super Bowl, folks. The Raiders will travel to Washington for a date with the Redskins on Sunday Night Football next week.

3. Atlanta Falcons (2-0) – The waters are about as muddy as they can be in the NFC, but the Falcons look like they’re still the class of the conference after walloping the Packers on Sunday Night Football. They’ve got a big one coming up on Sunday as they travel to Detroit to take on the 2-0 Lions.

4. New England Patriots (1-1) – I said the Patriots-Saints game may as well be a live murder, and it ended up basically being a live murder. The Patriots are adjusting course, so the rest of the league should beware. They host the Texans this weekend in a game that should be another veritable slaughter.

5. Denver Broncos (2-0) – I’m not discounting all the talent in Los Angeles, but beating the Cowboys is a lot different than beating the Chargers. The Broncos didn’t just beat the Cowboys, though, they absolutely eviscerated them. The Broncos defense made Zeke Elliott a virtual non-factor. Trevor Siemian is playing at a high level, and if this team can survive the AFC West, it could be dangerous come playoff time.

6. Green Bay Packers (1-1) – I don’t think a loss to the defending NFC Champions should have Packers fans concerned. They’re still going to be in the hunt at season’s end as long as they have Aaron Rodgers. They should have a nice rebound against the 0-2 Bengals this week.

7. Baltimore Ravens (2-0) – Sure, it’s been against teams that are a combined 0-4, but the Ravens have looked legit so far. Joe Flacco looks like he’s back to his old self, and that defense is just nasty. The Ravens travel to London to face a Jaguars team that is better than anyone they’ve faced so far.

8. Detroit Lions (2-0) – The Lions are 2-0 and they’re looking pretty damn good so far. Though their opponents are a combined 1-3, the Giants and Cardinals actually have pretty good defenses. So, that’s encouraging for Motor City’s team. I still think they’re going to need to run the ball to make a deep playoff run. We’ll know if they’re a real contender after Sunday, when they host the Falcons.

9. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0) – I still don’t really know what to make of the Steelers this season. On one hand, they’re 2-0…and you are what your record says you are, remember? That’s in my intro, by the way. Thanks for reading. On the other, they struggled to put away the scrappy Browns and beat up on a Vikings team that is missing Sam Bradford. They travel to Chicago to play the Bears on Sunday.

10. Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) – Based on the eye test alone, the Eagles look like the best team in the NFC East so far, beating the Redskins and holding their own against the best in the NFL, the Chiefs. Carson Wentz looks like he’s progressing into one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. But, remember – they started 2-0 last year before collapsing. They’ll try to hold serve when they host the New York Giants, a team that will be desperately trying to avoid an 0-3 start.

11. Dallas Cowboys (1-1) – How do you explain what happened to the Cowboys on Sunday in Denver? The Broncos just demoralized them. They certainly didn’t look like the class of the NFC, but it’s still a talented team. They travel to Arizona for a game on Monday Night Football next week, but if they can’t beat the Cardinals, it may be time for concern in Big D.

12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0) – The Bucs looked absolutely explosive in their season debut in Chicago. But, it was Chicago. So, let’s see what happens when they go on the road against a better defense in Minnesota this Sunday.

13. Tennessee Titans (1-1) – The Titans that we thought we’d see this season actually showed up in Jacksonville on Sunday. They should be able to capitalize on the weakest division in the NFL, but there’s still some lingering questions about this team. They host the Seattle Seahawks, who have virtually no offense this season, on Sunday.

14. Carolina Panthers (2-0) – Sure, they’re undefeated so far…but the Panthers haven’t looked especially impressive in wins over the 49ers and Bills so far. The NFC South looks like it’s going to be competitive this year, so we’ll see if the Panthers can survive the gauntlet. First up, the Saints come to town on Sunday.

15. Miami Dolphins (1-0) – The Dolphins should get a nice 2-0 start to the season as they’re making the trip up to New York to face a Jets team that has looked like the NFL’s worst squad so far. Jay Cutler played a fine game, but let’s be honest – this team is still built around Jay Ajayi and that defense that held a good Chargers offense in check. This could be a real dark horse in the AFC.
