Nashville Power Rankings: Week 7

Nashville – we’re back for Week 7 of the SoBros Network’s Nashville Power Rankings. As journalists, we have the story of a city to tell, and we’re hammering it out one week at a time.

The city is downright slow this week. I’ve noticed the traffic lightening up. We’re starting to get ‘out of office’ notifications, and it seems like everyone is starting to wind down for the holiday. Nonetheless, the show must go on.

This could be the last time you read anything new from us for about a week or so. I’ve been instructed by the team to take some actual time off because the way I’m working and living my life right now is extremely unhealthy and unsustainable. Soooooo…..if that’s the case, y’all have a happy 4th of July!

If you have a submission for this column, feel free to DM us on Facebook or Twitter, or shoot us an e-mail at thesobrosnetwork@gmail.com because we’re still too cheap to pay for e-mail hosting.

The Week In Review

Story of the Week: We’re gearing up for the 4th of July on Tuesday, and I’m a firm believer in nobody doing Independence Day better than Nashville. Actually, I’m a firm believer in nobody really doing anything better than Nashville. I might not be the best source of objectivity there. So, anyway, check out this awesome recap of holiday events from The Tennessean.

Blue Collar Badass of the Week: Officer Andrey Volfson. Courtesy of WKRN:

A man who was shot several times is alive thanks to a Nashville police officer who graduated from police academy less than two weeks ago.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the International Soccer Complex in Antioch. Police say a man was sitting in his car when four men walked up, possibly to rob him, and fired shots

The victim was hit in the side and the leg, but a quick-thinking police officer immediately started rendering first aid.

Cheers to you, Officer Volfson.

Honorary Nashvillian of the Week: Nick Saban. As I was cruising through the streets of Hermitage on Wednesday, I couldn’t help but notice the smooth, silky tones of Alabama’s head football coach on the radio. Indeed, the man is opening a car dealership near the airport, and is doing his own advertising. Probably because he knows that voice is going to arouse a lot of people around here.Responding Officer Andrey Volfson applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg. A doctor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center said that likely saved his life.

Shoutout: Stevie Palmer. This Belmont senior will be representing in the 4th of July tradition unlike any other: The Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Godspeed, Stevie. Music City is behind you.

Step Your Game Up

I-65 – Not a good week for the primary route from Franklin to Nashville this week. Wrecks, traffic jams, and the usual volume kept people from getting to and from work quickly. That wouldn’t be unusual if it didn’t feel like half the city was already on holiday. This city continues to grow faster than its infrastructure can keep up with it – we gotta get on that, y’all.

East Nashville Gun FightCourtesy of Nashville Patch:

Miraculously, no one was injured in a broad daylight gun battle near a busy East Nashville road Monday afternoon.

Witnesses said a silver Honda pulled up to a group of teens sitting on a porch near the corner of Main Street and Seventh Street and opened fire. The teens then began shooting, as well.

Come on, y’all. Is this what things have come to? Just gonna shoot it out in broad daylight now? Teenagers these days.

On to the Rankings

5. Popeye’s – Good week for area Popeye’s locations, as WKRN’s Neil Orne reports that two locations have scored a 98 and a 99 on health scores. Though I’m not a huge fan of Popeye’s, I’m willing to compile this list objectively, and they earned it. So, here’s to you, Louisiana Kitchen.

4. Shania Twain – Big news for one of the biggest stars in country music history. Twain is getting her own exhibition at the Country Music Hall of Fame that opens this weekend.

3. Chick-Fil-A – It’s long been an institution in the South, and now, Chick-Fil-A is stepping up their game. In honor of Cow Appreciation Day, you can get a free meal from the best fast food restaurant in all of the world, maybe the universe. All you have to do is dress like a cow. But, what if you dress like a cow every day because you are a cow??? HEYO (I’m fat)!

2. Logan Ryan – A nice little nugget of positivity trickled out of the Titans cornerback’s Instagram this week. Ryan paid off his brother’s student loans as a birthday gift – a kind gesture that has to have Titans fans excited. Building the team around guys like this has given the Titans a strong core of honorable character.

1. Fireworks – I’m not sure who ranks these things, or who has time to travel to every fireworks display in the country, but Nashville has a stellar reputation for having an awesome Independence Day display. I want to say, at one point, we were ranked in the top five, but I have nothing more than my memory to base that on and refuse to do actual research for this gig. So, with that being said, ladies and gentlemen, enjoy the show, and enjoy the holiday (responsibly). Your’s truly will be up in New Jersey watching the sky explode from a beach.

’til next week, you stay classy, Nashville!
