Nashville Power Rankings: Week 12

Nashville – we’re back for Week 11 of the SoBros Network’s Nashville Power Rankings. As journalists, we have the story of a city to tell, and we’re hammering it out one week at a time.

If you have a submission for this column, feel free to DM us on Facebook or Twitter, or shoot us an e-mail at thesobrosnetwork@gmail.com because we’re still too cheap to pay for e-mail hosting.

The Week in Review

Story of the Week: Hurricane Harvey absolutely ravaged Houston, but we’re only just now getting some of the rain here in town. Help out Houston by donating to J.J. Watt’s relief fund.

Honorary Nashvillian of the Week: Kendrick Lamar – From everything I read, his show was ELECTRIC this week at Bridgestone, but I’ll let you read the Nashville Scene’s detailed account here. I only have so many words in this column.

SoBros Story of the Week: Jonas Brotherly wrote a killer piece about The Joker getting his own origin movie.

Step Your Game Up

Gas prices – Hope y’all filled ya tanks up! Gas prices jumped six cents overnight and are likely to keep climbing.

The Nashville Statement – Fuck you guys! You don’t speak for me. You don’t speak for the community we’re trying to shape. Or, I guess you could put it a little more eloquently, as Mayor Megan Barry did:

On to the Rankings

5. TSU – How about the Tigers rattling off a win against FBS Georgia State, 17-10, last night? Way to get the Nashville area teams off to a good start, boys.

4. Tornado sirens – damn, at least we know the tornado sirens work all around Nashville. I don’t think there’s anything more disorienting than stepping out on my balcony and hearing the roaring screech of that siren. It always feels like we’ve reached the apocalypse. But, an overall good week for the Nashville tornado sirens nonetheless.

3. Brian Orakpo – Courtesy of The Tennessean:

Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Orakpo and the Titans are collecting items and donations for people displaced by Hurricane Harvey, the team announced on its website.

The donation drive runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Monday in Lot C at Nissan Stadium. Orakpo, a Houston native, and his wife, Bitura, will be on hand beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.

All donations go directly to the nonprofit Austin Disaster Relief Network, which is providing shelter to Texans displaced by the storm.

Items needed include box fans, air mattresses, new undergarments (all sizes, children and adult), new socks (all sizes, children and adult), toiletries (ie: shampoo, facewash, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc.), new bed pillows, new blankets, cleanup supplies, black trash bags, mops and buckets, utility knives, leather work gloves, inflatable mattresses, hand sanitizer, baby bottles, baby formula and baby diapers.

2. Labor Day Weekend – Well, the summer is now unofficially over. It’s September. It’s Labor Day weekend, and there’s plenty to do around town this weekend. Check out The Tennessean’s recap here, and remember, this is the last week of Live on the Green!

1. Etch Restaurant – Etch has been in Nashville for five years, yet somehow, I’m just finding out about them. The First Lady and I celebrated our six-year anniversary last Saturday night. Her family pitched in and bought us an Etch gift card, and the rest, as they say is history. A simple paragraph won’t do it justice, but I’ll give it a shot.

We started off with their signature roasted cauliflower. Our dinner was more or less a work of art on a plate – I had the duck, cooked to perfection, with hints of pomegranate and apricot and a delicious mint relish. The First Lady had the filet. Then, we topped it off with some olive oil almond cake and chocolate hazelnut mousse. I told her during the meal, “I don’t feel I have a refined enough palate for this meal. I’m not worthy.” So, it’s your local Nashville establishment of the week.

’til next week, you stay classy, Nashville!
