NFL Power Rankings: Week 6

Well, shit – we’re a bunch of football writers, so I guess we have to get in on the ‘NFL Power Rankings’ action. So, here we are. Your boy “Big Natural” is a major advocate of the Bill Parcells school of thinking in that ‘you are what your record says you are.’

With that in mind, my power rankings are going to be based on the body of work. I don’t care what you were supposed to do before the season started. Nor do I care what you could do in a potential matchup. I’m placing an emphasis on what teams have actually done.

NFL POWER RANKINGS: WEEK 5

1. Kansas City Chiefs (5-1) – Tough loss, but the Chiefs were truly tested for the first time this season against Pittsburgh. That was a Steelers team we all knew would come out playing hard after being embarrassed by the Jaguars the week before. These games are going to happen, but with no one in the NFL really running away with a division, I still look at the Chiefs as the most complete and talented team in the league. Even in a loss, they were in it until the end. Up next, Thursday Night Football opposite the Raiders.

2. Philadelphia Eagles (5-1) – Carson Wentz is underrated. People, you all need to get on this bandwagon now. The dude’s legit. More so, that Jim Schwartz-coached defense and rookie Derek Barnett are proving tough to account for. This is easily the best team in the NFC so far. They finish their season series with Washington this week.

3. New England Patriots (4-2) – The wins over New Orleans, Houston, and the New York Jets look a lot better than we figured they would, huh? I still like the Pats as long as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are living and breathing, and with all the chaos and parity in the NFL today, they should still be standing at the end of the season. Next week, we get a rematch of the Super Bowl on Sunday Night Football as the Falcons come to Foxborough.

4. Carolina Panthers (4-2) – Moving up on a loss? I know, I know…but, the truth is the Panthers looked pretty damn good against an Eagles team that is the best in the NFC right now. It looks like the Falcons and Buccaneers aren’t exactly what we thought they’d be, so the NFC South could be Carolina’s for the taking. This week, they travel to Chicago to play the Bears.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) – The Steelers went to Kansas City and ran all over the best team in the NFL and played stifling defense, but they were playing pissed off. If they can play on such an emotional high each week, then, yeah! They’re going to be great. I want to see it first, though. Still, gotta give ’em credit for knocking off the best team in the NFL – rising a ton of spots this week. Next week, the Steelers host the Bengals.

6. Seattle Seahawks (3-2) – the Seahawks were on a bye this week, but the offense had started figuring it out before the bye. That makes this a dangerous team in the NFC, which is up for grabs. They travel to New York to play the Giants this week.

7. Atlanta Falcons (3-2) – Tough loss to Miami. But, the talent on this Falcons roster is still supreme, and I believe in Dan Quinn. This should be a playoff team, but the NFC South is looking tougher and tougher each week. The Falcons are at a crossroads, but it doesn’t get easier as they travel to New England to play the Pats this week.

8. Houston Texans (3-3) – Deshaun Watson is playing electric football as the Texans, per the eye test, look like the best team in the AFC South. As the rookie quarterback continues to throw touchdowns, this could be a tough out in the playoffs. They get a bye this week and return to action the following week against the Seahawks.

9. Denver Broncos (3-2) – The Broncos are 3-2, but that loss to the New York Giants showed exactly what happens if this team plays a defense that has any sort of spark. Their two losses this season came against a talented Giants defense that played its best game of the season and a Bills defense that ranks among the NFL’s best. In fact, it’s fair to ask who the Broncos have really even beaten? Up next for the Broncos is a date with the Chargers in Los Angeles.

10. Los Angeles Rams (4-2) – The Rams put some points on the board against a damn good Jags defense in a matchup between easily the two most surprising teams in the NFL. Todd Gurley and Jared Goff make up an incredible nucleus of offensive talent, and this team looks legit. Next, they host the Cardinals.

11. Washington Redskins (3-2) – Don’t take the bait about the 49ers game – those Niners have been tough all season despite remaining winless. This offense is still scoring points behind Kirk Cousins, but the defense continues to show marked improvement from a season ago. The bright lights of Monday Night Football are in order, as the Redskins host the Eagles this week on ESPN.

12. Buffalo Bills (3-2) – One of the biggest surprises of 2017 so far, the Bills look good in all phases of the game. They were inactive this week, but return to action against Tampa Bay next week. I like this team to sneak up and steal one of the wild cards. I’m buying in.

13. New Orleans Saints (3-2) – The Saints are far and away improved from a season ago, as the NFC South looks like it’s going to be a wide open race. Wins over Carolina, Miami, and Detroit have them surging up the NFC ranks. If the run game and defense continue to play well, this team has a quarterback that could get them to the Super Bowl. They travel to Green Bay next week in a game they should easily win should Aaron Rodgers not play.

14. Miami Dolphins (3-2) – Well, after back-to-back wins over the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons, this Dolphins team is starting to look tough. They’re winning games in gritty fashion, and if they can keep the spark going, they could be a factor in the AFC East. Up next, they host the Jets.

15. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-3) – The Jags have the best secondary in the NFL. If they could generate some offense other than Leonard Fournette running the ball, they’d be absolutely deadly. Are we ready to say this team is a quarterback away from being real contenders in the AFC? Hmm….Next, they travel to Indianapolis to play the Colts.

16. Minnesota Vikings
17. Detroit Lions
18. New York Jets
19. Arizona Cardinals
20. Cincinnati Bengals
21. Green Bay Packers (the Packers are completely cooked if Rodgers is out for the season)
22. Dallas Cowboys
23. Tennessee Titans
24. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
25. Baltimore Ravens
26. Chicago Bears
27. Los Angeles Chargers
28. Oakland Raiders
29. New York Giants
30. Indianapolis Colts
31. San Francisco 49ers
32. Cleveland Browns
