Nick Saban Has to Be THRILLED With Alabama’s Ranking in the First College Football Playoff Rankings

The first College Football Playoff rankings dropped last night, and they look considerably different from the AP Poll. The AP penned Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Wisconsin as the top four teams in that order. The CFP committee disagrees. Their top four are Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Clemson in that order. Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has to be absolutely ecstatic to see it.

For years now, this mythical aura has enveloped Alabama. Specifically, this season – the Tide isn’t exactly playing its best football.

At the time, the Florida State win was huge. Seminoles quarterback Deandre Francois sustained an injury and hasn’t played since. But, his absence alone didn’t cause Florida State to drop to 2-5. Let’s be honest – the ‘Noles aren’t as good as we thought they were.

Perhaps the 27-19 win over Texas A&M is actually the Tide’s best win of the season. Even then, the Aggies are a 5-3 football team, currently sitting at 4th in the SEC West. Outside of that, wins over surprisingly good Mountain West teams, Fresno State and Colorado State, look like the best quality wins on the schedule so far.

So, Saban’s job has been trying to relentlessly push this team, because if it finds itself in front of an opponent like Georgia, Notre Dame, Clemson, or Ohio State, it’s going to be a different ball game. It’s hard to get these guys up for games against Tennessee and Arkansas, who they could beat with their eyes closed, one hand tied behind their backs, and in concrete shoes.

But, they can’t buy into the hype this season, when it really isn’t warranted. I think that’s why Saban dropped the rat poison press conference a couple of weeks ago.

Now that his team is ranked behind Georgia, he has concrete evidence to show his team that the way they’re playing isn’t good enough to be #1. Wow. Saban must be doing cartwheels this morning.

The Tide has the toughest stretch of their season coming up – LSU, Mississippi State, and Auburn (with Mercer thrown in there somewhere). If they win the SEC West, they’ll have a date with Georgia in Atlanta. So, the ball’s still in their court. But, they have to play better if they want to play in the last game of the season.
