SUBURBICON

3.5 out of 5 stars

In a quiet suburban community built on racism & ignorance, there’s plenty of leeway for murder. Damon is sensationally screwy in Clooney’s wildly dark, violent film that’s nothing like what you’ve seen in the trailers, & that’s a good thing. Let it surprise you & don’t feel guilty if you laugh just a little too.

ONLY THE BRAVE

4 out 5 stars

Burning w/ authenticity, emotion, & bravery, director Kosinski gives us a powerful true story of a remarkable group of men who face the flames head-on. Their boundless brotherhood & fearless fight in places very few have the guts to step foot in is incredibly inspiring. The entire cast is terrific, giving us a glimpse in to who these heroes were w/ Teller, Brolin & Connelly delivering three strong & superbly thoughtful performances.

 VICTORIA & ABDUL

3 out of 5 stars

Dench dazzles once again as Queen Victoria & is a force to be reckoned w/ in this royal film that’s light & charming. It could’ve been more daring, but chooses to keep the hostility at a low-level so it can sit on the throne w/ easy enjoyment.

JANE

3.5 out of 5 stars

From her groundbreaking work to her awareness & knowledge she’s sharing around the world, this beautifully shot, immersive film is a discovery in many ways. We go deep into the jungle to share her connection to her human & chimp family, providing an understanding we’ve never known or witnessed before. She’s living her dream & making every minute of it count.

BREATHE

3 out of 5 stars

Placing a broader scope on a singular story where it skips over years & hits the highlights on the inventive ways Robin Cavendish defies the odds makes this remarkable story a little less effective. Still, Garfield & Foy stir up a fairytale romance w/ die-hard commitment & give two excellent portrayals.

THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES

4 out of 5 stars

Baumbach makes it clear you can’t pick your family in this brilliant yet delicate dramedy that has a significant sting. Stiller & Sandler are sensational as 2 brothers choosing 2 different lives but chasing the same acceptance from their father. And as the dad, Hoffman is primo, letting his talent, ego & ungratefulness  rile up anyone & everyone who loves him

1922

3.5 out of 5 stars

Masculinity results to murder & regret in a dense yet uneasy head trip from the mind of Stephen King. Jane is fantastic as a man being buried by inescapable guilt, watching his world rot from the inside out.

BETTER WATCH OUT

3 out of 5 stars

There’s no holiday cheer in this demented Christmas movie that begins on familiar terms before spinning into a twisted, unpredictable, & vicious tale of loving someone until it hurts—or kills.

MARSHALL

3 out of 5 stars

A basic yet satisfying movie about the early years of the future first African American SCJ. It shows us a world that’s not too different than the one we live in now, placing issues of race, injustice & equality inside a  somewhat compelling court room drama. Boseman has become the boss of biopics & is great once again, while Gad shouldn’t be overlooked for his equally essential role that shows hesitance, fear, & guts.

THE FLORIDA PROJECT

4 out of 5 stars

Baker’s poignant, humane slice of life that’s rarely seen or told takes a generally inexperienced cast & lets them flourish in their freedom. It’s a childhood story that’s stacked w/ mischief & joy, but not w/o its share of harsh, heartrending realities. Newcomers Prince & Vinaite are spectacular, & veteran Dafoe is unmatched w/ his touching, tolerant performance never seen before.

 ONE OF US

3.5 out of 5 stars

A complex look at those fleeing from faith, specifically the Hasidic community in NY, in search of something more. This revealing, riveting doc shows three lives that are frightened yet determined to push back at oppression.

PROFESSOR MARSTON &

THE WONDER WOMEN

2.5 out of 5 stars

There’s no superpowers in this sexually charged, naughty story of an unorthodox love triangle becoming the inspiration for the most famous female superhero ever. The origins of Wonder Woman bewitches, & while the romantic relationships of its creator pushes the boundaries, it doesn’t soar past soap opera territory.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE

3.5 out of 5 stars

An intense, sobering look at kids turned soldiers who return home where their war rages on. This film doesn’t want us to forget what these heroes & their families have to deal w/ in the country they fought for, but struggle to survive in. Teller continues to impress w/ a role that doesn’t shy away from the eruption of PTSD, haunting memories, & the trained mindset of never allowing your true emotions to show.

BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99

3.5 out of 5 stars

Being brutally violent doesn’t even begin to describe what you’re in for w/ this illicit, behind bars movie. You’ll want to turn away, but it’s impossible due to the quietly intimidating, committed performance from Vaughn. What a thrill to see director Zahler make his Wedding Crashers star unrecognizable & fittingly vicious. The rage he carries is a heavy load no matter how rough & tough he is; though getting blood on his hands doesn’t bother him one bit. Not much does.

THE BABYSITTER

3.5 out of 5 stars

If Home Alone had barrels of blood & Satanism, it would be this juvenile but japing horror movie that’s gifted w/ a clearly aware, all-in cast. There’s a touching tale about growing up if you can make it through the madness where you don’t know whether to scream or laugh.

FACES PLACES

3 out of 5 stars

A charming, breezy film of 2 artists from 2 different eras forming this unique bond & breathing life, through personal, creative imagery, into forgotten places in rural France. It’s a road trip art project that’s a quaint ride, even if it doesn’t really go anywhere.

WHEELMAN

3 out of 5 stars

A simplistic but entertaining thriller on wheels that hits the gas, keeping the pace fast & frantic. Get out of the way of Grillo’s path. Even being crammed in a car, he steers a stellar performance as a getaway driver that tries to keep his cool while losing control.
