SEC Power Rankings: Week 11

Hey guys! Welllllllllll, we made it through the wildest weekend in the SEC so far this year. And truth be told, we were close to it being much crazier. The road to the Playoff took a major hit as #1 and #3 both went down in impressive fashion. With two weeks of regular season play left, the door is still open for several teams to claim a spot in the big four.

As for the SEC, it was shake up city! We’ve had firings, upsets, and all manner of excitement for the end of the season. How did each team fare? Let’s have a look. On to the rankings!

1. Alabama – Sometimes you don’t have to win, you just have to survive. Mississippi State gave Alabama all it could handle on Saturday night, but the Tide escaped with a win. Jalen Hurts was the hero of the day, sparking the offense to score with only 30 seconds left. The less than stellar play of the injured defense should cause some concern. They host Mercer, but should be planning for the Iron Bowl.

2. Auburn – What. A. Statement. The Tigers absolutely dominated the #1 Georgia Bulldogs Saturday, and made it look easy. In short, Auburn didn’t just win the line of scrimmage, they owned it. Making Georgia’s stout run game look insignificant, the Tigers have shown they’re contenders for the Playoff. The way Auburn played on Saturday, they were the best team in the country. The Iron Bowl just got much more interesting.

3. Georgia – After that beating, the Bulldogs should probably fall a little farther. Keep in mind, however, that the world isn’t ending for Georgia. They’ve still stamped their ticket to Atlanta, and a one loss SEC champion should make the playoffs with ease. Kirby Smart can’t afford another stumble, so it’s time to regroup and focus on Kentucky.

4. Mississippi State – I don’t believe in moral victories, but if I did, the Bulldogs would get one. I challenged them to bring their best game last week, and (assuming they read my articles, which I assume everyone does) they answered the challenge. Dan Mullen put together a solid game plan, and had his team in prime position to leave with a win. Some late game heroics dashed their upset, but the Bulldogs went toe to toe with Alabama. Now they head to Arkansas.

5. LSU – The Tigers took care of business by dominating a limping Arkansas. As they continue to win, the loss to Troy becomes more maddening. Fortunately for Coach O, the Tigers are bowl eligible, and are playing for a top tier bowl now. They head to Tennessee this weekend.

6. South Carolina – The Gamecocks are sitting at seven wins after beating a terrible Florida squad. It wasn’t an impressive win, but those are hard to find in the SEC East this season. With Wofford coming to town, the Gamecocks should finish with eight wins before heading to bowl season.

7. Texas A&M – A win over New Mexico isn’t impressive, but it beats the alternative. Besides, the Aggies needed the win to become bowl eligible. More than likely, the Aggies will finish the regular season with seven wins, and Kevin Sumlin will be let go. They head to Ole Miss this weekend.

8. Kentucky – The Wildcats put a solid beating on Vanderbilt to mark their seventh win of the season. They’ll be going bowling after a fairly solid season (you know, for Kentucky football.) That’s the good news! The bad news: Georgia and Louisville make up the rest of their schedule. Seven wins could be it for the Wildcats.

9. Missouri – Make it FOUR in a row! I’m still pulling for the Tigers, who have somehow managed a hot streak. I mean, the lack of strong contenders in the East has a lot to do with it, but I’m going to give them credit anyway. With Vanderbilt and Arkansas on the schedule, Missouri has a solid chance to go bowling.

10. Ole Miss – Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu has a bright future, and has the Rebel Sharks offense firing on all cylinders. With nothing to play for this season, Ole Miss has exceeded expectations. With A&M and Mississippi State left on the schedule, a winning season might be tough to find. But nobody expected one anyway.

11. Vanderbilt – Getting thrashed by Kentucky is not the way to wind down a season with a lot of potential. The Commodores will need to win out to have a shot at a bowl. With Missouri and Tennessee left, a 5-7 finish seems likely.

12. Arkansas – Well, you fired your Athletic Director. Now all you need to do is get rid of your head coach, and you’ll be in better shape.

13. Tennessee – IT FINALLY HAPPENED! Sorry, I had to yell so you could hear me over the sounds of celebration emanating from every Vols fan in Tennessee. No Butch, but no bowling either.

14. Florida – Honestly, the bottom three are tied. You’re just in the basement because I drew straws. Congratulations! You’re not alone in being terrible. That counts for something.
