Movie Review Rewind: Four Christmases (2008)

During this time of the year, every holiday-themed movie will do good at the box office. Well except maybe Deck the Halls. Of course, with names like Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon headlining this holiday movie, it has to be good right? Well it is good, but just barely. A lot of the funny scenes are in the previews, which makes sense since its only an hour and twenty minutes long.

Vince Vaughn just did Fred Claus last year so maybe he shouldn’t have done two holiday movies back-to-back. And Reese Witherspoon is too good for this movie. The material really is beneath her. Now I want to say that the movie does have funny parts and has somewhat of a story. A very thin one. But it is about learning about one another and finding out if you really are meant to be. I get it.

Movies like these are very predictable. So the end was not disappointing. We all see what’s coming. But even the other characters in the movie are useless. They all are supposed to come off funny, yet they become annoying. Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Jon Favreau, Dwight Yoakam, and Tim McGraw all play characters that do not help the story, but almost ruin it instead. They aren’t really that funny and anyone could have played those parts. Almost any one.

The movie really is on the shoulders of Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon. I like both of them. I have enjoyed their movies, but I think this one was not their greatest work. Not by a long shot.
