Movie Review Rewind: Valentino: The Last Emperor (2009)

In Valentino: The Last Emperor, we step in to the world of fashion and in to the world of Valentino Garavani, one of the most famous and respected fashion designers in history. This documentary follows Valentino and his life and business partner Giancarlo Giammetti while they put together some of the most elaborate fashion shows, but we also see the fashion world changing and we do not know if Valentino will change with it.

This documentary followed Valentino around for two years, June 2005-July 2007. We really get a detailed glimpse of what Valentino, the company and the man, is all about. He is an “old school” designer who loves what he does and creates. In his own words, Valentino said he can only do fashion and he is a “disaster at everything else.” But that’s not true.

Valentino is passionate about fashion, but he is intelligent and knows what he wants. He is also a great business man. He has to be to still be going strong in the ever changing world of the fashion industry. However, there is talk about Valentino retiring and rumors always going around and Valentino always is asked about it. But with the company being sold and the brand of Valentino going in to a new direction, Valentino may not be around for it.

You learn that Valentino is a charming and bright man, but he is also private and does not want anyone to know his weaknesses. Not even Giancarlo. But he is a stubborn man and will do whatever he wants. But I guess Valentino has earned it.

This documentary is very interesting and you don’t have to know about the fashion world to enjoy it. Just to see the behind-the-scenes is entertaining enough. But the partnership between Valentino and Giancarlo is amazing. Not only have they been able to stay together for over 40 years, but they have managed to separate their business and their personal lives, and both are successes. But they are honest to each other and sometimes it turns in to some funny scenes.

No matter if Valentino has left the fashion world forever or not, it doesn’t matter. He has left a huge mark on the fashion world and this documentary shows you his dedication and passion for the business. It is entertaining and fascinating. The documentary has to be because Valentino himself is entertaining and fascinating. I mean his fashion shows make people cry. Seriously.
