TOP 5

Five (tie):

BLADE RUNNER 2049

A stunning achievement visually, this sci-fi spectacle immerses us into an amazing story of discovering what it truly means to be human that’s been 35 years in the making. Director Denis Villeneuve brilliantly builds on the uneasy, deeply demoralizing world of Blade Runner, all the while inciting its challenging yet compelling themes.

Five (tie):

DUNKIRK

Simple but stunning. Beautiful yet horrific. Nolan makes this part of history a swift, rip-roaring tale of survival and comradery, witnessing tremendous devastation while being completely dumbfounded. No matter where the battle takes these men, you’ll be submerged in the thrills with each passing second. This epic war film was born to be seen in IMAX.

Four:

THE SHAPE OF WATER

A beautifully bizarre love story that could only come from the genius of Guillermo del Toro. Dazzling with romance, enchantment, and danger, it’s a far-out fairytale that will sweep you away with enormous ease. Without hardly saying a word, Sally Hawkins is extraordinary, and Richard Jenkins, Michael Shannon and Octavia Spencer make a spectacular supporting cast.

Three:

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

This spectacular sequel stands on the shoulders of the original and elevates this galactic gang’s story of who they are and the maverick family they’ve grown in to. The wit, excruciating emotion, killer tunes and visual splendor make this an extravaganza everyone needs to experience. Guardians of the Galaxy is a standout Marvel franchise, and after these two volumes, it may be the greatest.

Two:

BABY DRIVER

A blast from beginning to end with soothing sounds of beats being dropped and cars dancing on the pavement. Director/writer Edgar Wright tunes up and unfetters a brilliant, dreamlike story that floors it, driving the thrills over the limit. The fired-up, phenomenal ensemble cast is on a joyride of serious speed, style & spectacle.

One:

LOGAN

Comic book movie my ass. This unstoppable,emotionally-charged,gritty bloodbath is something much more. Through the pain, scars, and sacrifice, director James Mangold provides an affectionately human element to a mutant story. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart are phenomenal, making their iconic characters’ last breath forever indelible.
