Venom Is Definitely Among the G.O.A.T. Super Villains

In case you missed it earlier this morning, a new trailer for Sony’s Venom starring Tom Hardy dropped this morning.

I am all kinds of fired up for this one. Venom was always one of my favorite characters in the comics growing up, and I really like Sony’s ambition with the character. This looks like what DC could have pulled off with their universe by making it “dark and gritty,” had they actually executed it better. I don’t really understand the hate that this is getting on the Twitter machine – Tom Hardy is a good choice for Eddie Brock. Carlton Drake is an easy villain to introduce, and I love the casting of Riz Ahmed in that role. Plus, the idea that Woody Harrelson could potentially be playing Carnage?!?! Give me a break.

And, it’s coming out before Halloween. Just has that spooky sort of vibe to it, so I’m all in. I think this thing can work, and if Sony plays it right, their little Spider-verse idea could gain some credibility if this movie is a success. But, the whole thing depends on Venom. No pressure.

But, the idea of this character even existing is so strange that it always drew me in as a kid. Here’s this journalist who slips into a depression after wrongly accusing a dude for murdering someone that comes into contact with a powerful alien symbiote that drastically alters his personality. That was mind-boggling and terrifying to me at the time.

Like DC’s slew of iconic Batman villains, Spiderman always seemed to have the best bad guys. You can spit your Green Goblin takes, but in my opinion, Venom was chief among them all.

But, he still holds his own in the larger Marvel universe. No, he’s not some gigantic intergalactic threat to all humanity the way Thanos or Galactus is. But, he’s a pretty credible bad guy, and while I wouldn’t put him on that level in terms of power, I’d definitely put him on that level in terms of being an interesting character.

If I’m doing a quick Marvel villains power rankings in terms of level of interest, I’m going:

10. Thunderbolt Ross
9. Carnage
8. Mephisto (because he’s literally the devil)
7. Thanos
6. Sabretooth
5. Doctor Doom
4. Ultron
3. Venom
2. Magneto
1. Loki
