2018 Heisman Watch – Week 3

The Heisman Trophy is one of the strangest awards in the sports world. There’s no objective way to win…by default, people vote on the award. So, for the most part, it’s all about perception. Numbers don’t matter as much as winning and having those signature “Heisman” moments. We’re talking about the big time players from the big time teams in the big time conferences.

Which is unfortunate, in my opinion. I’m a strong proponent of everyone at least getting a shot, but that’s just not the way the world works. So, with that in mind, I’m taking a look at who’s who in the 2018 Heisman race so far based on who fits the seemingly arbitrary criteria laid forth by the Heisman Trust. But, if you think I’m wrong to do so, feel free to hit up the comments.

2018 Heisman Watch: Week 3

5. Drew Lock, Missouri QB – It took a field goal as time expired for Mizzou to beat Purdue, but man what a gutsy performance by the Tigers. Once again, Lock was solid, throwing for 375 yards and three touchdowns with another score on the ground. If it wasn’t his lowest rating of the season, he might be higher on the list this week.

4. Jerry Jeudy, Alabama WR – We’re three games into the season, and Jeudy has just 11 receptions, but Saturday’s game was something else. He racked up 136 yards and two touchdowns on just three receptions against Ole Miss. Folks, that’s an average of 45.3 yards per catch. His average on the year is 26.1 yards per reception (T-4th in the FBS). He has a pair of touchdowns in every game this season, so maybe it’s time we start talking about the Tide receiver. The thing he has going against him is the same thing Tua Tagovailoa has going against him – there’s so much depth and talent on the Alabama roster, that it may be hard for Jeudy to net the opportunities to put up Heisman-esque stats. There’s no one guy on Alabama’s offense.

3. Darrell Henderson, Memphis RB – With back-to-back 200+ yard performances, Henderson is now the leading rusher in the FBS with 521 yards. If the Tigers ran the table, I might say the kid has a shot in the Heisman race, but that one-point loss to Navy may come back to bite them. Against Georgia State, Henderson had 233 yards and two touchdowns.

2. Kyler Murray, Oklahoma QB – It’s time I start talking about the Oklahoma Sooners – they’re rolling so far behind Murray. They went on the road and defeated a good Iowa State team 37-27. Murray went 21/29 for 348 yards and three touchdowns, with an additional 77 yards on the ground. Murray has now accounted for 10 total touchdowns on the year.

1. Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State QB – Haskins has put up great numbers all season so far, but it was the clutch performance on the road in Dallas against a damn good TCU team that has him topping this week’s Heisman Watch! Against the Horned Frogs, Haskins went 24/38 for 344 yards and two touchdowns with an additional rushing touchdowns. His total touchdown count is up to 12 on the season.
