Quinnen Williams Explains Why He Should Be the Top Pick in the Draft and I Don’t Disagree

Quinnen Williams came out of nowhere. Seems like the Alabama Crimson Tide produces at least one player like that every year and this one is no different. We’re constantly amazed by how much turnover the Tide roster has season over season and how many players end up going in the first round of the NFL Draft. We wonder how on Earth they’re going to replace such production, and then someone like Williams pops up and establishes himself as a dominant presence.

It’s crazy – Williams was hardly mentioned in preseason honors, and now finds himself in the conversation to be the top pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Last week, he told NFL.com exactly why he thinks he should be the #1 pick.

Courtesy of NFL.com:

I’m really not worried about how high I’m drafted. I just really want to work hard and do what I gotta do to make it to the NFL and make it on a team.

But why should I be the No. 1 draft pick? Because I’m all about working. My IQ level is through the roof. I can sit down and break down film of a quarterback and [identify] tendencies and stuff like that. I work very hard on the field and off the field. I’m a team player, I’m a coachable player and I really listen. I’m just ready to get out there and learn from the veterans, who I watch on “Madden.”

Well, it’s draft season, folks. I’m about to start diving into 2019 NFL Draft content. So, I don’t know who my ‘top player available’ is going to be just yet, but I don’t think I’m against the idea of Williams going number one.

All of those things he said about himself – yeah, that’s true! Not to mention the guy’s an outright force on the defensive line. I get the Aaron Donald comparison to a certain extent, but also think it’s unfair to the kid when you throw such lofty expectations on him when he hasn’t played a down in the NFL. Could he be the type to effect games in the same way Donald does? Sure.

But, most importantly, he fits in with one of the biggest needs of the Arizona Cardinals. DE Nick Bosa seems to be the preeminent choice to go #1 overall unless someone falls in love with a quarterback and trades up to get one. I’m not so sure I’d rule out Williams, though. We still have a long way to go before the draft.
