Salmonella News: Don’t Eat the Short Rib Gnocchi at Milk and Honey

Well, ol’ salmonella’s back in the news. This time, making its way to our very own beloved Music City. That’s right – Nashville’s Milk and Honey is in some legal trouble because people have been stricken with this gut wrenching disease.

A Nashville restaurant is facing four separate lawsuits after a salmonella outbreak left at least 20 customers sick. Each lawsuit is seeking up to $1.5 million in damages, totaling more than $6 million dollars.

The lawsuit alleges that Milk and Honey, a restaurant located in The Gulch, was negligent, leading to the outbreak.

The customers became sick after eating at the restaurant on Aug. 3 and Aug. 4. The lawsuit said at least 20 people reported becoming infected with salmonella, a foodborne illness that can lead to nausea and vomiting and, in some cases, can become very serious. After an investigation, the Metro Public Health Department concluded that the diners got sick after eating the restaurant’s short rib gnocchi. Health Department Spokesperson Brian Todd said that dish was made using contaminated eggs.

Welp. That’ll do it, I’d say.

But, I have questions – first of all, what the fuck is a gnocchi? Wikipedia tells us, “Gnocchi are various thick, small, and soft dough dumplings.” Oh, so it’s plural. Well, then.

In doing my due diligence as a journalist, though, I found an astonishing fact:

Wow – this is going to be a pretty detrimental revelation to the people with salmonella and their lawsuit. As it turns out, salmonella is one of the key ingredients in gnocchi.

I mean, unless my eyes deceive me, it is right there in plain language characters.

I’m no legal expert, though I did for some reason work in Compliance for a couple of years, but I would posit that you can’t sue someone for poisoning if you voluntarily consumed the poison.

Taylor Monen, the owner of Milk and Honey, told NewsChannel 5 the outbreak was an “unfortunate incident” isolated to “one day in August.” She said the restaurant immediately cut ties with Gravel Ridge Farms after the outbreak. Monen declined to get into specifics, citing the pending lawsuits.

Man, ya hate to see it. But, “cutting ties” isn’t enough. Something like this happens, I think it would’ve been a fair response to literally burn Gravel Ridge Farms to the ground.

I don’t want to presume they’re going to close this restaurant, but the fact that they are putting the ribs of short people in dumplins alone is a testament to the kind of character of this establishment.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that Nashville restaurants are becoming like the head of the hydra. You shut one down, three more pop back up in its place.

Damn, what a waste of time this piece was.
