Previewing SUP’s Card for ‘What Could Possibly Go Right?’

Southern Underground Pro (SUP) returns to The Basement East this Sunday (3/3/19) for their latest effort, “What Could Possibly Go Right?”

SUP has really hit its stride in the past year, each show seemingly growing larger than the last. Event after event, this is one of the more consistent promotions in the entire southeast. This card is loaded with fresh faces and new talent, so let’s hit the highlights.

And, I should specify – at least, if you’re going to hang with the SoBros crew on SUP Sunday, go and start hydrating now. Your liver will thank you.

Also, I should specify that you never know what’s going to happen in the world of independent wrestling. As we learned on the most recent episode of Checks and Championships, detailing the chaos surrounding SUP’s Achy Breaky Heart in February of 2018, anything can happen. So, let it be written. Let it be known – card subject to change.

‘What Could Possibly Go Right?’ Card

Mr. Brickster vs. Faye Jackson – Wow. This is a match that is going to happen. It was the first one announced for the card, when Stokely Hathaway informed Brick back at I Am King that the final boss would be coming to Nashville on 3/3. To say things have been heating up between the two on Twitter would be an understatement.

Allie Kat vs. Kevin Ku – Mose and I were just chatting on a recent episode of Checks and Championships about the underrated run Allie Kat is on and how she’s one big win away from being in the conversation for a Bonestorm Championship opportunity. This could be such a win, but Ku isn’t someone to be taken lightly. From a pure competitive standpoint, this match features two of SUP’s elite. And, I wish it were as simple as that, but unfortunately, Ku took things too far at I Am King, attacking Allie Kat as she was trying to help diffuse the situation at the end of the show. He made this bout personal, and now it’s a grudge match.

Cabana Man Dan vs. Dominic Garrini – This will undoubtedly be Dan’s biggest singles test in SUP, going against the former Bonestorm Champion, who holds victories over Curt Stallion and Jeff Cobb in his past. Both of these men have been in tag team action as of late, so it’ll be interesting to see if there’s any singles rust on these two. That could work in Dan’s favor, but you have to assume Garrini is the heavy favorite in this one.

Jaden Newman vs. A.C. Mack – I first saw A.C. Mack at SCI last year, and was blown away. The guy’s a superstar on the rise, and making his SUP debut, he could make an immediate impact. On the opposite side of the ring will be Newman, who is making tremendous strides in Chattanooga all the while coming into his own in SUP. Whoever wins this match will be making a statement, and this could be your show-stealer for the evening.

Nick Iggy vs. James Bandy – We have the other half of The Carnies, the reigning SUP Match of the Year recipient (vs. Effy), taking on another newcomer to SUP in James Bandy. This’ll be my first look at Bandy, but from what I’ve heard, this ought to be a good one.

Kerry Awful vs. The One Called Manders – Boy, you want to talk about a hell of a debut…that’s exactly what Manders had at I Am King. The Cornbelt Cowboy is big and powerful, and he bested some of SUP’s most beloved mainstays to win that scramble match. His reward? A match with the heart and soul of Tennessee wrestling. Is he going to keep his momentum going? Or, will Awful put him in check? This is an intriguing match-up.

Bonestorm Championship: Brett Ison (c) vs. O’Shay Edwards – It’s the match we’ve been wanting for four months. Two former tag team partners – guys who teamed up to make one of the biggest statements in Tennessee wrestling in 2018 (The Music City Murders). Hell, maybe THE biggest statement in Tennessee wrestling in 2018.

Ison went on to win the Bonestorm Championship. But, when Edwards attempted to celebrate with him, Ison turned on him, saying he didn’t need him anymore.

The bad blood has been boiling ever since November of last year.

But, I think the Championship Committee at SUP did an admirable job of keeping the spirit of competition at the forefront of the championship scene. Instead of going with Ison vs. Edwards in January, which would’ve been an easy decision, they booked Nick Gage to come challenge for the title.

You don’t want a situation you can’t control on your hands and if you put two guys as angry as Ison and Edwards in a ring, that’s exactly what you’re going to get. The problem was that neither guy wanted to cool off. Over two months passed, and the issue was still anything but resolved. After Ison’s successful defense against Gage, the violence continued as Edwards hit the ring to engage his former friend. I think the SUP team might’ve seen that if they didn’t book this match, this sort of extracurricular activity was going to continue.

So props to the SUP Championship Committee for adjusting on the fly. If you’re looking at homegrown SUP guys, Edwards is the rightful number one contender. You also know that if you don’t at least try to restrict this feud to a wrestling ring, it’s going to spill over into locker rooms (just ask Revive)….hell, maybe even the streets. That’s when you lose the excuse of ‘sport,’ and things can serious in a hurry.

SUP had a decision to make, and I fully believe they made the right one for both the sanctity of their championship and the health of their locker room.

I don’t recall a contest this deeply personal in SUP’s history. If you’re expecting a mat classic, you’re going to be disappointed. This is going to be a slugfest between two guys who want to hurt each other.

I’d also caution you to come to The Basement East ready to get the fuck out of the way if these two bulls come charging your way.

The road to ‘What Could Possibly Go Right?’ has been a wild one.

Ho. Ly. Shit. LFG.
