True Detective Power Rankings: Season Three

Well, True Detective season three is in the books. I thought it was immensely better than season two, but not quite on the level of season one. As we’re prone to power rankings on this site, you better believe I have my True Detective power rankings at the ready.

The finale wasn’t exactly unanimously loved…that’s not so different from season one, but personally, I loved it. I thought it was a nice touch to leave it open to interpretation – did Wayne really forget what he was doing at Julie’s house?

Courtesy of me:

We’re also reasonable people. As long as Henry has that address, it’s safe for us to assume that matters are handled. My guess is Henry looks into the address and either Wayne comes back around or Roland puts the pieces together.

There’s also the idea that maybe Wayne was faking his forgetfulness. I mean, hell – he did it all season with Elisa. Perhaps he saw Julie and thought, “I don’t want to meddle.” Maybe he did come to and simply chose to leave things undisturbed. I mean, think about what happens to this beautiful life Julie has apparently built if this case comes back in 2015. Could Wayne have seen that and decided it was better left as is? Sure.

But, it really was just the story of a family going crazy and buying a kid. Kindt was a nice nod to season one, but wasn’t there for a massive government cover-up after all. Turns out, he really was just a power-hungry asshole who wanted convictions, right or wrong, at all costs.

It was fun to piece this giant mystery together over the course of the last two months. Here’s to hoping for an equally enthralling season four!

Aight – on to the rankings!

Honorable mentions: Michael Rooker as Edward Hoyt was phenomenal, though the character appeared briefly. Same with Junius, who really had a strong performance in the finale, but was kinda quiet otherwise. I thought Freddy Burns was another tragic character and a prime example of just how much this case effected the people surrounding it.

True Detective Power Rankings: Season Three

10. Brett Woodard – Poor guy – something about his voice was so soothing. Does anyone know if he’s doing audio books?

9. Harris James – What a shit bag – I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a True Detective character to die as bad as I did James.

8. Gerald Kindt – We had our eyes on him the whole time. He was a big time piece of shit, but it turns out, he just wanted convictions and was not covering up a pedophile ring. Still, the constant intrigue made him a memorable character.

7. Dan O’Brien – Grill me for it if you want, but the charisma that
Michael Graziadei put into this role was energizing – creepy af or not.

6. Lucy Purcell – What a fucking mess.

5. Amelia Reardon – Wasn’t too keen on Amelia. Felt like they made her out to be shady for no real reason. The only thing that really redeemed this character was the performance of Carmen Ejogo.

4. Henry Hays – This one might be controversial. I thought Ray Fisher was great as Wayne’s son, exhibiting signs of his father’s secretiveness.

3. Roland West – Cowboy Roland might have had the best lines of the entire series. Stephen Dorff was phenomenal. Round of applause – now, let’s hope this kick starts a big time comeback for Dorff.

2. Tom Purcell – I’m standing by it….as much as I loved Dorff, Scoot McNairy is still the unsung MVP of this season. His portrayal of Tom was absolutely heart breaking. He stole almost every scene he was in, but the interrogation scene was the icing on the cake.

1.Wayne Hays – I know it’s the easy way out to have the main character atop the power rankings, but Mahershala Ali was fabulous. Watching Wayne unravel this mystery while battling his condition was enthralling.

What do you think, True Detective fans? Who were your favorite characters from this season?
