Full Tennessee Titans 2019 Draft Recap

That’s a wrap on the 2019 NFL Draft, ladies and gentlemen. Another year in the books and another class of rookies heading to the NFL. We’re in the end game now – OTAs start on May 20th. Mandatory minicamp is June 11-13. Other than that, this is our last big football event until training camp begins in late July. The Tennessee Titans came away with six picks this year – let’s hit the highlights.

Tennessee Titans 2019 Draft Recap

Round 1 (19): Jeffery Simmons, DT Mississippi State – You can read my full thoughts on this complicated selection here. You worry about his ACL, for sure. He likely won’t play his rookie season, and if he does, we won’t see him on the field until November (presumably) at the earliest. Then, there’s the ugly incident from 2016 that raised character concerns. But, I tend to trust Jon Robinson and Mike Vrabel when they say this is a good kid who made a terrible mistake. It’s a long term investment for a guy who has been compared to Ndamukong Suh.

Round 2 (51): A.J. Brown, WR Ole Miss – Could end up being the best receiver in this entire draft class. He’s a two time first-team All-SEC wide receiver. He set a school record with 1,320 yards in 2018. This hoss was built for the NFL at 6’0″ 227 pounds, and brings great athleticism with that frame. Could potentially be the #1 in this offense….an absolute steal at #51.

Round 3 (82): Nate Davis, G Charlotte – Two-time honorable mention All-C-USA selection, with a second-team all-conference selection under his belt in 2017. Tape shows an incredibly low stance, but he’s already said he “can’t get that low in the NFL.” Good power guy who looks tailor made for the Titans run scheme. Hell, I’d figure this kid should end up being the starting RG in 2019.

Round 4 (116): Amani Hooker, S Iowa – The Titans swapped 4th and 5th round picks with the New York Jets to grab Hooker. He is the reigning Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year, tallying 65 tackles (3.5 of those for a loss) and four interceptions. Scheme will be important, but Dean Pees has a tendency to find ways for guys to contribute. Hybrid type of safety who should prove useful in the nickel and covering athletic tight ends.

Round 5 (168): D’Andre Walker, Georgia – Walker had 7.5 sacks for Georgia in 2018. He’s a good athlete, but raw. Still, he should contend for a good rotational spot in the pass rush right away.

Round 6 (188): David Long, Jr., ILB West Virginia – Bit of a surprise here as the Titans go ILB to wrap up their draft. Long was a productive player for the Mountaineers, winning the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors his junior year. He’s widely considered undersized, but is a savvy, instinctual player. Might get an immediate look on special teams, but will need some time to develop into an ILB.
