2019 Draft Grades: Tennessee Titans

The 2019 NFL Draft is in the books, and for the Tennessee Titans, it was all about production and value. Jon Robinson, Mike Vrabel, and company did, in my opinion, an excellent job of filling holes with talent. Some good fortune led to some tremendous players slipping to the team in the middle and late rounds, and the organization capitalized on it.

Tennessee Titans 2019 Draft Recap

Round 1 (19): Jeffery Simmons, DT Mississippi State – Titans Facebook complaining about this pick, saying the Titans didn’t need another defensive linemen, makes no sense to me. Austin Johnson has not panned out. DaQuan Jones had a down year. The team needs game wreckers in the front seven – guys who can effect opposing quarterbacks. Simmons is a top five talent that fell to #19 because of injury and character questions. It’s complicated, but I like it. Grade: B. A+ talent, but the uncertainty surrounding Simmons’ return from injury has me taking it down a peg.

Round 2 (51): A.J. Brown, WR Ole Miss – the Titans needed more play-makers on offense. I understand Brown is raw, but he could potentially be the best receiver to come out of this draft class. Grade: A++++++++. Brown has the talent to be a potential Week 1 starter.

Round 3 (82): Nate Davis, G Charlotte – People are calling it a reach, but the Titans could have gotten their starting RG with this pick. Like Brown, Davis is raw, but has enough talent to potentially be a Week 1 starter. Grade: A

Round 4 (116): Amani Hooker, S Iowa – The Titans traded up to get Hooker, who has the size, instincts, and talent to become a starter in the NFL. Grade: B. I didn’t think safety was a need the team would trade up to get, but they obviously saw a tremendous value in Hooker.

Round 5 (168): D’Andre Walker, Georgia – He’s a developmental pass rusher, but he should have a fair chance to get into the rotation his rookie year. A major value and steal in the 5th round. Grade: A.

Round 6 (188): David Long, Jr., ILB West Virginia – Some were critical of the pick, but the Titans were in a spot where they could pretty much take their best player available. Long is “undersized,” but I love his production. I don’t think you label him the heir apparent to Wesley Woodyard, and I don’t think he’s coming for Jayon Brown‘s or Rashaan Evans‘ spot. But, he’s a solid addition to the linebacking corps. Grade: B

Grade: A

I absolutely love how this shook down for the Titans. I can’t recall liking a draft this much for the Titans in years. The Titans could have two potential Week 1 starters on offense in Brown and Davis. Simmons could be a Pro Bowler if he returns from injury at 100% of what he was before. Not to mention, if he does reach that potential, the idea of him playing alongside Jurrell Casey would make for one of the NFL’s greatest defensive line tandems. The Titans filled holes with talent and made this roster deeper.
