2019 Draft Grades: New York Giants

Well, the 2019 NFL Draft is in the books, and with a plethora of draft picks, the New York Giants had plenty to work with. They undoubtedly created the story of this draft when Dave Gettleman elected to select Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the 6th overall pick. ESPN is still talking about this move and I’m sure we all will be for a very long time. So, let’s hit the highlights of this year’s haul for the G-Men.

New York Giants 2019 Draft Recap

Round 1 (6): Daniel Jones, QB Duke – I understand that this was the guy the Giants wanted, and they reportedly tried to get out of the #6 pick, but couldn’t. So, it is what it is. That said, I don’t understand how you pass on Dwayne Haskins. It just doesn’t make sense to me. The Giants needed to nail this pick, and I can’t say that they did. Grade: D.

Round 1 (17): Dexter Lawrence, DT ClemsonDamon Harrison out. Dexter Lawrence in. I loved the pick – I know the Giants have some promising young defensive lineman, but Lawrence can step in and be the anchor right away. The Giants were bad against the run last year. Lawrence should bolster that. Grade: A.

Round 1 (30): Deandre Baker, CB Georgia – The Giants needed a corner bad. Like, Day 1 starter bad. Baker can be that cornerback. This is easily my favorite of all of their draft picks. Grade: A.

Round 3 (95): Oshane Ximines, DE Old Dominion – Personally, I think they should have grabbed a pass rusher earlier. I don’t know what kind of impact Ximines will have right off the bat, but he will certainly get the opportunity to. Grade: B.

Round 4 (108): Julian Love, CB Notre Dame – A good, versatile defensive back and the Giants needed plenty of them. Grade: B.

Round 5 (143): Ryan Connelly, ILB Wisconsin – It’s hard to knock the Giants for getting bodies on defense. They needed help at all three levels of the defense, and in Connelly, they have a tough guy with solid speed and size. Grade: B.

Round 5 (171): Darius Slayton, WR Auburn – Slayton is a fast guy, but a raw route runner. The Giants don’t have time to develop him. They need receiver help immediately. I love getting Slayton in Round 5, but not given the context of the Giants current receiving corps. Grade: C.

Round 6 (180): Corey Ballentine, CB Washburn – The third defensive back taken in this draft. The Giants needed help, and they sure did invest in getting bodies there. Ballentine is undersized and could potentially have a hard time covering NFL receivers. Grade: C.

Round 7 (232): George Asafo-Adjei, OG Kentucky – Good run-blocker, but he’s a project. The Giants should have addressed the offensive line earlier than Round 6. Grade: C.

Round 7 (245): Chris Slayton, DT Syracuse – Really good value here given how much the Giants need help in defending the run. Grade: B.

Grade: C

If you take the offensive picks out of this draft, I’d give ’em a damn A! The defensive picks were that damn good. I love the additions of Lawrence and Baker. Both should be Week 1 starters. Ximines, Love, and Connelly could all develop into nice rotational players, and Slayton is a good get late. But, I just can’t get over the Jones pick and then waiting until Round 5 to get a receiver.
