Is It Even Possible for Alabama to Be Better on Offense in 2019?

The 2018 Alabama Crimson Tide offense was an absolute juggernaut. Averaging 45.6 points per game put ’em as the third best offense in the country behind only the Oklahoma Sooners and the Utah State Aggies. Some, myself included, have even said that it was the greatest Alabama offense of all time. So, 2019 presents an interesting challenge: how does this Alabama offense get better? Is that even possible?

From a recent interview with new old offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, it sure sounds like it is.

In evaluating both quarterback and offensive talent, Sark wants to increase the pressure on defense by having Tagovailoa execute full progression reads.

“We are trying to add to an offense that was very prolific a year ago and how can we be more prolific and stay ahead of defense,” Sarkisian said.

This just sounds like nonsense, Sark. I’m sorry. I’ma say it.

You had to say something, right? Couldn’t just be like, “nope…everything’s fine here…absolutely no work to do…” But, “yeah we need more full progression reads” sounds like Sark just thought of the first thing that came to his head. It’s like Twitter guy who actually knows nothing about football – he just repeats stuff he sees coaches tweet about or say.

I know Tagovailoa performed immensely worse against elite defenses. We all saw those games against Georgia and Clemson a season ago. Yes, he needs to develop But, the truth is, he’s still relatively young in his football career. He’s going to develop over time! It’ll be fine, guys.

Now, this offense has to replace Josh Jacobs and Damien Harris in the backfield. Is Najee Harris going to be #TheGuy? Can he and Brian Robinson make for just as lethal a duo? Maybe. How about those offensive line concerns?

Like, there’s just too much going on for me to buy in to the idea that this 2019 offense even can improve. Forget ‘very prolific.’ Try ‘historic.’ This offense was historic a season ago. How often do you back one historic season up with another one? That’s hard to do.

Yeah, I hear ya, Sark. But, I’m going to place my bet on ‘there’s no way this offense can be better than the 2018 one.’
