Netflix Nourishment: 17th Edition

This edition of Netflix Nourishment offers up quick reviews of In the Tall Grass and Eli.

IN THE TALL GRASS

A lousy Stephen King adaptation that the author himself should be embarrassed of. Director Vincenzo Natali, just like the lost characters in his movie, can’t find his way through the weeds to provide the audience anything remotely terrifying as we witness grass constantly changing direction and time. Besides the beginning, nothing else diverting grows in this unkept field of fiascos. There’s no taking this soggy sci-fi, scary tale seriously when any incoming of interesting ideas get mowed down early on.

ELI

Director Ciarán Foy’s haunted house tale captures the curiosity about a boy in hopes of getting cured from a rare disease that won’t allow him to do the very basic of things – take a shower, play outside, hug his parents – without his skin burning and unable to breathe. Ghosts in the mirror, horrific dreams, a doctor with dark secrets, it’s familiar yet spooky stuff. And that’s the best Foy has to offer. Halfway through, the creepiness is gone and confusion has set in with no real idea of what is occurring and why. On top of that is the twist, which while unexpected, takes a turn for the absolute worst. It sends all we’ve watched up in flames.
