College Football Accountability Post 2019: What I Got Right

"Big Natural" Stoney Keeley looks back at the 2019 college football season and relives the takes he got right.

This college football season was one for the ages. You had a truly historic march from the LSU Tigers – undefeated, SEC Championship, Heisman Trophy, National Championship. Some interesting turnover in the SEC. What looked like an all-time great Ohio State Buckeyes team that was surprisingly upended by the Clemson Tigers. Speaking of tigers, the Memphis Tigers were a hell of a story. Not to mention, the ascension of programs like the Baylor Bears and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

All in all, another fun year in the college football game.

In this content game, a lot of people are out there making predictions left and right. As an analyst, you always run the risk of looking like a complete and total ass, but that’s the price you pay to play the game. For me, I’m big on transparency. So, I’m willing to look back and review some of the things I said before the season started – and before you judge me for patting myself on the back like this, hold up – I pointed out just how much stupid stuff I got wrong here. Now, LFG.

WHAT I GOT RIGHT IN 2019

“It could be a special season in Baton Rouge” – Okay, so this actually wasn’t my take, but I know John Mosley isn’t brash and arrogant enough to write an entire column about all of his takes that came true. But, guess what – I am brash and arrogant. So, I’ll say it. Mose, you nailed this shit! Earlier in the season, we talked about the prospects of this Tigers team making a run, and if I recall correctly, Mose straight up said, “if this team can beat ‘Bama, this could be a dream run for LSU.” Well, GUESS WHAT Y’ALL….they beat ‘Bama.

Auburn’s defense – I said before the season started that Auburn’s defense would not only keep them in games, but that it would be good enough to make them a legitimate College Football Playoff contender. They ended up disrupting the race big time by winning the Iron Bowl, and guess what – they had one of if not the best defenses in the country.

Clemson’s run – After that scare against North Carolina, Mose and I went on the College Football Roundup and said, “uh oh – y’all done woke up the Tigers.” I said they’d run the table in the ACC like a cake walk and turn it on in the playoffs. I was right about the ACC, and they did turn it on to beat a historic Ohio State team. Ultimately, they, like everyone else this season, came up short against LSU. This has to be the formula as long as the ACC is this bad though, right?!

Memphis to the Cotton Bowl – I believe I wrote in my 2019 Memphis Tigers season preview that the Tigers should be considered a dark horse to get the Group of Five’s spot in the New Year’s Six. For a hot minute, it looked like the SMU Mustangs would upset that pick. But, ultimately, the Tigers achieved their destiny after what was a special season.

“Stick with Jeremy Pruitt” – I’m most proud of this one. There’s something about Jeremy Pruitt that makes me believe in him as a leader of men. When the Vols dropped to 0-2, the fan base was ready to crucify the guy and move on to the next coach. On the College Football Roundup, we preached patience. We still saw what this guy was capable of, and what happened?

The Vols finished 8-5.

If this team could have those Georgia State and BYU games back, they’d be a 10-3 football team. 10 WINS! Now, they’re poised to be an up-and-comer in the SEC East next season. We’ll see.

Well, this fed my ego properly.
