Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez

Your enjoyment of this documentary is going to hinge largely upon how much you actually know about this case. At least, I found that to be the case for me. If you’re going in blind, I can see how it would be pretty shocking. If you know a lot about the case to begin with, there’s not really anything in this doc that you didn’t already know.

Having said that, it’s still pretty jarring to hear the actual phone calls…to hear how calm and collected Aaron Hernandez was during the whole thing. Also, gotta say it was rather bizarre to discover how much that dude wanted to read the Harry Potter books.

This is a story that highlights several issues – CTE and mental health chief among them. But, also how sociological factors can affect a young man’s life, the role parents play in a child’s development, our adulation of athletes, and the sliminess of the football world, a realm in which coaches might sweep things under the rug for the sake of winning (*cough cough* Urban Meyer *cough*). If you don’t like the way football players get special treatment in our country, this mini-series is definitely going to piss you off.

Finally, I just want to say that Mike Massey is the realest motherfucker of ’em all.

Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer

Do not – and I cannot stress this enough – fuck with cats. This doc mini-series explores one of the most bizarre cases of murder you’ll hear about. It’s a testament to the power of social media, how it can enable behavior, and ultimately, how dangerous it can be.

It follows a couple of Facebook users who banded together to uncover the identity of a man who literally killed kittens on camera and posted it to YouTube. It’s not for the faint of heart, either – full disclosure – some of this stuff is pretty hard to watch. But, as the story progresses, and this mystery man’s actions escalate to more serious crimes, it becomes more and more shocking and unbelievable.

By the end, you’ll be taking a longer look at yourself in the mirror.

The Witcher

I’m all in on high fantasy, and The Witcher is that perfect sweet spot for me. It’s like Game of Thrones with all of the politics dialed down and the monsters, magic, and fantasy dialed WAY up.

Henry Cavill absolutely nailed it as Geralt of Rivia – could not have cast a better fit. The series follows Geralt – not just a witcher, but THE witcher – a monster hunter with supernatural abilities used to fight creatures of all sorts. There’s action. There’s romance. There’s humor. And, there’s a BANGER of an anthem in “Toss A Coin to Your Witcher.

The pacing jumps around a bit. I’ve seen a few reviews criticizing the series as “hard to follow” because of this. Admittedly, the story did feel a bit rushed….as if Netflix probably could’ve gotten two or three seasons out of this arc, but wasn’t sold on whether or not it would renew it (spoiler alert: they did. There will be a Season 2.).

All in all, a solid effort in the genre. I’m already looking forward to re-watching it. It’s worth catching if for no other reason than Geralt’s battle with the Shtriga in Episode 03. Sick.

6 Underground

This is definitely a movie that exists.

Look, I know it’s a Michael Bay movie. I’ve already been hit with “what did you expect?” But, even with that in mind, the whole thing just felt completely hollow and predictable. At least Ryan Reynolds is Ryan Reynolds.

Side note: I told my girlfriend I was writing about this movie, and she said, “did I see that?” I said, “we literally watched it last night.” She had no clue….if that tells you anything about this movie.
