Welcome to the first edition of “Ever Seen That?”, where we will be highlighting films that you may have forgotten about or not even heard of at all. I had a whale of a time picking a film to kick this thing off, but after a rewatch a few nights ago, I just had to go with the super underrated Band of Robbers.

Band of Robbers is a modern day retelling of The adventures of Tom Sayer and Huck Finn. In the film, Huck is freshly released from jail and who else would be there to pick him up other than his bestest friend Tom Sawyer, who is now a police officer himself. The good news is even though he’s a cop, he’s still the same Tom looking for the easy way out along with the fabled Murrell’s treasure.

The film itself has a certain Coen-esque feel to it, but maybe a bit zanier at times. The cast is pretty damn hilarious with Kyle Gallner and Adam Nee (who also co-directed with his brother) as Huck and Tom having great chemistry. I especially loved Nee as Tom who brings a real sweetness to the role. We’ve also got Matthew Gray Gubler and Hannibal Buress playing a couple of Tom/Huck’s friends with both having some real fun moments along the way.

The story wouldn’t be complete without Becky Thatcher played by Melissa Benoist who is gold in her scenes with Tom Sawyer. Last but certainly not least is our antagonist Injun Joe played by the legendary Stephen Lang. This is a small role as far as screen time goes, but Lang is downright dirty in all the right ways as Joe. He’s gross, mean, and has a look in his eye that says “I’ll kill you all.” Hell yeah.

If all of this sounds like something you’d be interested in, head on over to Netflix right now!
