It’s never too early to start poking around the odds for the upcoming college football season, right?! I mean, sure – there’s the chance the whole damn season is canceled because of the global pandemic going on. At the very least, the season might be delayed…or even split into two halves. Anyway, let’s not think about that – let’s talk about the fact that the Alabama Crimson Tide are currently the favorites to take the SEC in 2020 as things stand here at the beginning of May.

Per Vegas Insider:

  • Alabama: 7/10
  • Georgia: 5/1
  • Florida: 6/1
  • LSU: 6/1
  • Texas A&M: 10/1
  • Auburn: 14/1
  • Mississippi State: 100/1
  • Tennessee: 100/1
  • Kentucky: 125/1
  • Missouri: 125/1
  • Ole Miss: 125/1
  • South Carolina: 125/1
  • Vanderbilt: 250/1
  • Arkansas: 500/1

Won’t lie – I’m kind of surprised to see Alabama at #1 and LSU at #4. I know the Tigers are losing Joe Burrow to the Cincinnati Bengals. I know Joe Brady is now the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. But, they still have the wondrous Coach O leading the way, Ja’Marr Chase at wide receiver, and the not-so-shabby Myles Brennan taking over at quarterback. It’s not reasonable at all to expect LSU to repeat the historic 2019 they had – that was one of if not the greatest college football runs of all time. But, fall to 4th in the SEC when they host the Tide this year? Oddsmakers must be looking at those road trips to Florida, Texas A&M, and Auburn as insurmountable.

For the Tide – they have a big time question at quarterback. Mac Jones figures to be the incumbent, and I think he can definitely be the guy for ’em. Oddsmakers must have confidence in the guy to maintain the dynastic run that Alabama is on. The Tide draws the Georgia Bulldogs in their third game of the season. That’s one of those ‘make or break’ type of games, but both teams have the benefit of playing that game early. You can incur a loss early on in the season and still come back from it.

They get the Auburn Tigers at home for this year’s Iron Bowl. Bo Nix is heading into his sophomore season, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them make some noise in the SEC West this season, but ‘Bama has OWNED the Tigers at home in recent years. The host the Texas A&M Aggies. They play the USC Trojans in Dallas. Honestly, I would not be surprised to see the Tennessee Volunteers rise up in Knoxville.

If Alabama’s defense can reload the way it usually does, and they can get some stability at quarterback, they could very well win the SEC. But, that footing seems shakier than it ever has before in my eyes. Take a look at Florida’s schedule and tell me if that doesn’t make that 6/1 bet look a whole lot more appetizing.
