After weeks of inactivity in free agency, defensive back Logan Ryan took to Instagram yesterday to break the news that he would officially be moving on from the Tennessee Titans. A seven year veteran of the NFL, Ryan has spent the last three seasons in Nashville, where he became quite the leader on one of the league’s best defenses. Now, we don’t know what the future holds for the stud cornerback, but we know it lies outside of Tennessee.

Look – at this point, no one should’ve been blindsided by this move. The longer we got into free agency, the less likely it was that Ryan was going to return. The Titans had too many mouths to feed, and ultimately, landed on paying other people instead of Ryan. The team drafts Kristian Fulton. They sign Johnathan Joseph. Then, the rookie jersey numbers dropped earlier this week, and well – seeing Fulton scoop up that #26…that just drove it all home.

While the Titans should be okay at corner from a pure Xs and Os standpoint – Adoreé Jackson is developing into one of the best corners in the league, Malcolm Butler is going to be back healthy, and Fulton looks promising – what they’re losing in Logan Ryan is a wealth of leadership skills. The guy had his ups and downs on the field, but you could almost always count on him to be in the right place, play smart, and play for the team. Considering that the team also shipped off Jurrell Casey this offseason, they’re going to need someone to step up and be a leader on defense. Kevin Byard ought to be that guy – maybe Rashaan Evans or Jayon Brown. I’m just spitballin’ here.

We had three good years with Ryan – perhaps nothing is more special during his time here than the pick six he had against the Patriots in the playoffs in New England’s own building. We don’t know where he’s going to end up, but wherever it is, they’re going to get a blue chip character guy.

Oh, and don’t come away from this without noticing that #PayDerrick at the end…he ain’t the first player to come out and say King Henry deserves that pay day.
