THE SHOCK OF THE FUTURE

Set in Paris in the late 70’s, Alma Jodorowsky is alluring as a young musical innovator named Ana who has her finger on the pulse of what the future holds for music. This ultra thin yet groovy film about the origins of electronic music is one big jam session. It does sing that same old tune of a struggling musician wanting their big break, but taking the female perspective and seeing the genius ignored by a music industry ruled by men turns the volume up on its pertinence. Co-writer and director Marc Collin lets the creative juices flow as machines replace instruments and open up the possibilities of what the world will dance to.

CAT IN THE WALL

A politically-charged drama centering around a Bulgarian family living in a London apartment where diversity and hostility are invited in. Directors Vesela Kazakova and Mina Mileva attempt to show the cat stuck in the wall resembles the family stuck in a society that doesn’t care about them. That connection is a very loose one and far from compelling. Their building under construction, the fighting with neighbors – none of it adds up to anything worthwhile. The social relevance Kazakova and Mileva hope to share struggles to strike a chord as it’s being told within a apathetic and uneventful story.

GUNPOWDER HEART

Andrea Henry and Vanessa Hernandez give two raw performances well beyond their years as girlfriends whose lives are changed forever within seconds on one horrifying night. Their way of coping goes down a dangerous and destructive path. Writer and director Camila Urrutia presents a tragic, painful tale of how do you move on after being a victim of sexual violence. Her depiction feels fearful and earnest when handling the fragility of a traumatic exploit, the repercussions that immediately follow, and the unbearable suffering that’s not always visible.
