Scoob Was Fun, but Disembarks From Traditional Scooby-Doo Style

Stoney Keeley offers up his thoughts on Scoob - stating that while it was charming in its own right, it's far from a traditional Scooby-Doo tale.

I can honestly say confidently and comfortably as a 33-year old grown ass man that I am 100% a big time Scooby-Doo guy. Just something about the gang, the thrill of the mystery, and being in on figuring out the puzzle as a child reeled me in. I have fond memories of the summer time as a kid – watching Scooby-Doo in the morning and then going out and pretending I was in Mystery Inc. all day long (don’t be creeped out – I’m an only child…I was used to playing alone…). That’s why I was ecstatic to see Scoob – an animated feature that ignited that nostalgia within me, and bringing that sense of fondness to a new generation.

Scoob is a charming story on its own, touching on themes that include the importance of friendship and being there for the people you care about and the importance of being yourself and finding your own way in life. There’s a nice message in this movie, and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t tug on the heart strings a bit.

But, if you’re going into this looking forward to a classic Scooby-Doo mystery, you might find yourself disappointed by the end of the movie. It’s a much more straightforward story than the riddle-laden tales of yesteryear. Scoob borrows from the superhero genre, and personally, I found the villain a little Despicable Me-esque to boot. But, those are minor nitpicks.

An all-star cast translates to a fun animated feature that (hot take alert) I have ranked ahead of Onward as the best one yet this year.
