Do the Titans Really Have a Top 10 Offense in the NFL?

Stoney examines the question of whether or not the Titans have a top 10 offense as we approach the 2020 season.

Listen I love the Tennessee Titans as much as the next guy. That 2019 season was one of the most special in the franchise’s history. The run to the AFC Championship was one for the ages – hooray hooray, and all that enthusiastic jazz. But, just because it happened a year ago doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to happy again in 2020. That’s why I’m a little aghast to see analysts out there expecting that level of production to remain the same. Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire said the Titans have the 10th best offense in the NFL.

The reasoning is pretty simple – they’re returning a lot of key cogs on an offense that was elite in the yards per play category. I get it – believe me. I think it definitely benefits the Titans to have their offense largely intact from that dream run, especially in a season with such a crazy offseason.

But, there’s a lot to consider when you look at last year – is it reasonable to expect that Ryan Tannehill is going to play nearly perfect football like he did when he led the league in passer rating? Can they maintain such a high level of explosive plays? It’s just so hard to play as perfectly as they did and maintain that level of consistency.

That’s why I’d say pump the brakes on thinking that 2020 is going to go just as smoothly, and just as expertly, as 2019 did for the Titans offense. I don’t know that I’d automatically just rank them inside the top 10.

My quick, off-the-top-of-my-head-without-any-real-research, NFL offense power rankings:

  1. Kansas City Chiefs
  2. Dallas Cowboys
  3. New Orleans Saints
  4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  5. San Francisco 49ers
  6. Baltimore Ravens
  7. Los Angeles Rams
  8. Philadelphia Eagles
  9. Atlanta Falcons
  10. Seattle Seahawks

Are the Titans one of the 10 most complete teams in the NFL? Yeah, absolutely. Are the pretty close to a top 10 offense? Yeah, sure. Are they there yet? I’m not willing to say it – I want to see more 2019-esque Titans offense before I put ’em there.
