Pour One Out for the BNA Carpet

It's a sad day in Nashville's history, as our beloved BNA carpet is being torn away from us and replaced with something that is much less iconic.

I wish I had great news to report this morning, folks. Really, that’s when I feel like we’re at our best – just uplifting people and providing nothing but good news. That’s the SoBros Way – just ignore everything bad that we probably should at least be paying attention to and pretend everything is all sunshine and rainbows. But, that’s not always the case – sometimes, we have downright tragedies to cover, and today is one of those days. Guys, the BNA carpet, an institution of the city for Nashville locals, is being torn up and replaced.

Courtesy of The Tennessean:

It’s the end of an era at Nashville International Airport. Not just because of the new $292 million concourse, added tech-enhanced parking garages, and planned overhaul of the lobby, security lines, and concessions. Because the abstract, mottled beige-brown carpet synonymous to many with arriving in Music City is being replaced.”

You can check out the full story linked above for more info on the planned change, but honestly, to me, it just feels like a bunch of lip service to try and get us locals on board with the decision to do this, which I’m NOT, by the way. And, for what it’s worth, I will NEVER be okay with tearing up the BNA carpet.

That was one of the things that tourism hadn’t taken from us locals. We all bonded over that carpet and taking photos to share with the BNA carpet Instagram page. Now, what are we going to do?

And, really – where do we draw the line? Are they going to take Bobbie’s Dairy Dip from us? The laser tag on 2nd avenue? When do we put our foot down and say “not our Nashville?” Do we need to organize that movement?

That carpet used to put me in the mood for adventure – I would see that carpet and immediately be in vacation mode. Conversely, I always knew I was home when I saw that carpet. What’s that? A tear in my eye?

You can call me dramatic if you want to, but guys – this is an emotional time to be a Nashvillian of 34 years.
