Josh Jacobs Sounds Just Like Nick Saban

After putting on a show against the Panthers, Raiders RB Josh Jacobs delivered a quote that sounds JUST like his college coach...

Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs is quickly becoming one of my favorite players in the NFL. He’s one of the few backs in the league that you can build an entire offense around – all things can flow through Jacobs, and things are going to be just fine. Put him in there with the McCaffreys and Henrys of the league.

With one of the more underrated offensive lines in the league in front of him, Jacobs figures to be a force in 2020. Hell, I thought he had more of a claim to the ‘Rookie of the Year’ title than Kyler Murray did in 2019. He can do it all. In the 2020 opener against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Jacobs got 25 carries and turned that into 93 yards and THREE touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 46 yards, reminding us all of just what a versatile weapon he can be. The Raiders won that game 34-30 to start the season 1-0.

But, that wasn’t exactly good enough for Jacobs, and once you read this quote, you’ll definitely be able to see that Alabama Crimson Tide influence on this dude.

“I just feel regular, honestly,” Jacobs said, via the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I had a pretty good game, but there’s a lot I can correct. I know there’s a couple plays I look back and think, ‘Dang, I missed a backdoor cut there.’ That’s the kind of thing I try to hold myself to is having a perfect game and try to come back better next week.”

Man, if that doesn’t sound like Nick Saban coming out of that young man’s mouth, I don’t know what does. That’s programming right there – part of the culture that has been instilled in this guy from an early age. Winning isn’t always enough, and it’s always important to look at yourself and see what you can do better. There’s a job to do, and you can’t rest on your laurels.

Jacobs is a competitor, and a champion – that’s the kind of character you want in your football players.

And, it’s also a testament to the kind of character that Saban has molded out of his guys during his tenure as the Tide head coach. That’s what’s come to be expected at Alabama – not saying every man that comes out of Tuscaloosa is a champion of men. Just pointing out the influence you can hear in some of his former players’ voices – Jacobs is just the latest illustration of that.

The Raiders take a big step up in competition next week, as they host the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football. The Saints open up as a 5.5-point favorite in Las Vegas.
