My Favorite Fall Movies

"Big Natural" Stoney Keeley lists some of his favorite fall movies to watch as the seasons start to change.

‘Tis the season to start pulling out the pumpkins and the fall foliage. The weather’s starting to change just a shade – just a tad bit of a crisp cool nip in the air early in the morning and late at night. Football is back on our televisions. Stores are putting out their Halloween candy. It’s enough to remind us that autumn is just around the corner.

For me, it also means a certain type of music, and a certain type of movie. If you don’t already know this about me, well…I’m kinda weird about my seasonal shit. There are certain things I only partake in during a specific season. And, guess what – as things start to cool off for the year, I’ve got a list of several movies that I like to watch to get me into the fall spirit. As a journalist, it’s my obligation to share those kinds of things with the people, y’know?

So, here we are – talkin’ fall movies. The criteria is pretty simple. I eliminated a lot of the horror movies and Halloween themed stuff. That shit is reserved for Spooky Season (check out Brittany’s 31 Days of Halloween preview here). These are movies that are seasonally atmospheric or always remind me of this time of year. I also reached out to our resident film critic, Brandon Vick, to offer some of input on this list. LFG!

My Mount Rushmore of Fall Movies

Dead Poet’s Society – The Robin Williams classic is one that I usually start my fall viewing schedule with, as it’s not really fall-themed, but the atmospheric overtones and morose nature of the story just resonate with me at this time of year for whatever reason. Nothing beats a cool early September evening with this one going.

The DepartedThe Departed is one of my all-time favorite movies. Released on October 6, 2006, it was one of the few movies I ventured to the theater multiple times to see on the big screen. Not to mention, “Comfortably Numb” is an all-time fall song in my book, and well…if you’ve seen The Departed…you know……you know.

Friday Night Lights – What’s a fall movie schedule without a good football movie? In my opinion, there isn’t one better than Friday Night Lights. Clear out a Friday night in October and put this bad boy on.

Garden State – A real masterpiece from Zach Braff – story, acting, and the knockout soundtrack alike. Braff and Natalie Portman star in this sobering flick that has that somber ‘fall mood’ stamped all over it.

Good Will Hunting – Man, Brandon knocked it out of the park with this selection. This wasn’t on my list, but it is now – I can’t believe I ever forgot about it. Are Robin Williams and Matt Damon the kings of fall? We could definitely make that argument. It is an absolute classic.

Monster House – I’m torn on whether or not to include this one here, but if I’m being honest, I always watch it in September, well ahead of #SpookySeason. Not to mention, it actually hit theaters in July of 2006. It’s a ‘tweener, for sure, but since I’m the author here, I’m going to list it. It’s on my Mount Rushmore of fall movies.

Remember the Titans – Okay, I said I wasn’t going to include more than one football movie…otherwise, what’s the point of doing separate ‘fall movies’ and ‘football movies’ lists, right?!?! But, I just can’t leave Denzel Washington off this list. It’s a rite of passage for fall.

You’ve Got Mail – Brandon dropped another ace recommendation here. You can’t beat Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and the chemistry between the two. This is the perfect flick for cuffing season, when all the single people are looking to shack up with someone so they don’t have to spend the winter alone.
