I am not sure what most of you have been doing this week since there really hasn’t been anything too exciting going on the world. This week, I have been on vacation from the ‘shoot’ job and have spent most of it in a dentist chair having some much-needed work done. This week’s New Music Friday is so sweet it is going to send me right back to the chair with cavities. This edition takes us international as we check out the latest from an Australian pop goddess and the biggest girl group in the UK and maybe the world.

Kylie Minogue Disco

July 12, 1979 is the day disco is believed to have died after the Chicago White Sox held the promotion ”Disco Demolition.” Fans were invited to bring disco records to the game to have blown up after the game. After the White Sox lost the game, a giant box filled with records was brought on to the field where a disgruntled radio disc jockey wearing a camouflaged hat and jacket led the crowd in chants of “disco sucks.” The crate of records was detonated, and shattered records flew across the field. The explosion left a large hole in the field leaving the White Sox unable to play the second game of the scheduled double header.

That summer evening in July of 1979 is still credited as the day that disco died, but anyone who has spent any amount of time listening to pop music over the last 40 years knows that disco is still alive and well. The latest and maybe greatest example of disco’s heartbeat still beating with the blood of a technicolored dance floor is Kylie Minogue’s new release, aptly titled Disco.

From start to finish, Kylie does on Disco what her younger contemporaries like Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa and Carly Rae Jespen weren’t able to accomplish on their 2020 releases and that’s truly capture the essence of a long era long gone. Minogue goes full disco-diva on the album as she hopes to recapture the attention of American ears that she once held after the release of 2001’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.”

Several tracks off Disco deserve to be on rotation once dance floors are packed again after the pandemic included “Magic,” “Supernova” and “Where Does the DJ Go?” It is the lead single “Say Something” that is the clear standout on her 15th album. The song is perfect for the world we all live in today. Kylie asks though we’re a million miles apart “can we all be as one again?” and by the end of the song the answer is a resounding “yes.” @kylieminogue

Little Mix Confetti

Little Mix has proved over the last 9 years that they are the best British girl group. The girls formed in 2011 as contestants on the British version of The X Factor and after winning the competition, quickly signed with Simon Cowell’s record label. Success came instantly for the girls as they were a huge hit in the U.S. following the release of their 2012 debut album DNA. Over the last 8 years, they have broken numerous records set by the Spice Girls, cementing them as one of the best girl groups of all-time. Little Mix is ready to add to their accomplishments with their sixth studio album Confetti.

In 2018, the members of Little Mix (Jade Thirwall, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jesy Nelson) announced they were leaving Cowell’s label causing a huge riff in their relationship. The former American Idol host questioned why artists thought they were more important than any of the label’s staff members. The girls waste no time on the album as they issue a rebuttal on the album’s opener. They sing “I don’t do what Simon says/Get the message ‘cause it’s read” and “Be a puppet on a string/Works for you but that isn’t me” on “Not a Pop Song.”

The album’s standout track is “Sweet Melody,” a song all about dishing dirt on boys that have done the ladies wrong. While the songs on Confetti don’t quite match the level of their biggest hits “Black Magic” and “Shout Out To My Ex,” there are several that will be on their set list for tours to come included the aforementioned “Sweet Melody” and “Holiday.” Though the girls are free from their former label and able to make the music they want it is very satisfying to fans that Confetti is just business as usual. @LittleMix
