FREAKY

2 out of 5 stars

This is unsurprisingly standard slasher stuff, so it’s the comedy components that become super important. It’s basically a life or death situation for Freaky. Sadly, aside from a few good jokes – it’s fading fast.

Vince Vaughn goes from Jason Voorhees to a high-school girl heroine and strangely nails it. Meanwhile, Kathryn Newton goes from nice to naughty, slicing and dicing in a red leather jacket. They are easily killing it, and if not for their inexorable and offbeat performances – Freaky would be cutting it close to being a campy clunker.

From Christopher Landon, director of the Happy Death Day movies, his body-swapping horror-comedy should be more fun. It’s fast-paced, lively and nastily gruesome. However, it’s a so-so attempt at a premise that Landon could’ve really flipped the script on. The flashes of cleverness and self-awareness just adds to the frustration because it shows what could have been if pushed much further.
