Deshaun Watson’s Performance Leads This Week’s NFL MVP Watch

Deshaun Watson's brilliant game against the Pats may be the only chance we get to include him in the MVP Watch this season...

Welcome in to the 2020 NFL MVP Watch, where I will be taking a look around the landscape of the MVP race in the NFL this season. This is pretty much the same thing as my Heisman Watch, sooooo…like, do I want to spend a lot of time on an intro?

Shit, I guess I will for the uninitiated – each week, I will count down the five most MVP-worthy performances of the week and offer up my reasoning for each ranking. You finish first, you get five points. Second is four, so on and so forth. I will keep the season point totals going at the bottom of the article and at the end of the season, whoever has the most points gets the 2020 SoBros Network NFL MVP “honors.”

NFL MVP WATCH: WEEK 10

5. Justin Herbert, Chargers QB – Hey, let’s show the Rookie of the Year front-runner some love real quick. Dude led the league in passing yardage this week, going 37/49 for 366 yards and three touchdowns. Are the Chargers going anywhere this season? Hell no – but the future’s looking bright with Herbert at the helm.

4. Philip Rivers, Colts QB – Similar to how I put Ben Roethlisberger in last week’s MVP Watch just by virtue of how much his return to the Steelers lifted that team, I think we need to acknowledge just how much Rivers’ addition has improved the Colts. Dude is spreading the ball around as this Colts offense seems to have found its groove. In the big comeback win over the Packers, Rivers went 24/36 for 288 yards, three touchdowns, and a pick.

3. Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB – Mahomes continues to surge in the MVP race after Russell Wilson took an early lead. He was fantastic yet again on Sunday night, getting the Raiders-sized monkey off his back and avenging the Chiefs’ lone loss of the season. He went 34/45 for 348 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick, engineering a game-winning drive on top of that.

2. Derrick Henry, Titans RB – They call King Henry a closer, and it’s certainly hard to argue with that when you watch games like Sunday’s game against the Ravens. Henry led the NFL in rushing this week with 133 yards (on 28 carries), and his ridiculous touchdown run in overtime clinched the game for the Titans, who improved to 7-3 in the process.

1. Deshaun Watson, Texans QB – Just an unreal day for Watson, and you can’t help but wonder if his star would be burning a little brighter if he didn’t end up in Houston. He’s one of the most promising young quarterbacks in the NFL today, but because of the Texans’ record, I think he’s lost in the shuffle.

But, he damn sure wasn’t lost in the shuffle against the Patriots on Sunday. Watson did it all in the 27-20 upset, going 28/37 for 344 yards and two touchdowns through the air, with 36 rushing yards and a score on the ground to boot. We might not get many opportunities to put Watson in the MVP Watch because of how poorly the Texans have played in 2020, so I’m going to mention him while I can. Bravo.
