Let’s Add Summer Catch Into the Regular Summer Movie Rotation

Stoney Keeley campaigns for Summer Catch to be added into the pantheon of summer movies. Not -good- movies...just...summer movies.

I don’t know if you guys are like me or not, but part of the fun in each changing season is all of the movies that come along with it. I’m well aware that this could be some sort of weird obsessive compulsive/anxiety issue – kind of like that thing where anxious people watch the same shows over and over because they know what’s going to happen and that’s comforting. But, each season, I have a certain rotation of movies that just match the vibes right and get me into the spirit. You put up the Christmas tree, it’s time to watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. The leaves are turning red and yellow? Fire up Remember the Titans. There’s half a foot of snow on the ground? The Hateful Eight. Memorial Day weekend? Grown Ups. I could go on and on. But, that’s the context for what I’m about to say – spring has sprung and the sweltering heat of summer is nearly upon us. I think there just so happens to be a Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jessica Biel movie that perfectly encapsulates this time of year: Summer Catch.

That’s right – it’s a tale as old as time. The poor boy, who happens to be a minor league baseball player, and the rich girl fall in love while the boy struggles to catch on with a Major League Baseball team. Or, some shit like that. I know it’s set in Cape Cod, and there’s a lot of yard work involved, too. Look – I’m not saying it’s any good. In fact, we dove into this movie on last month’s episode of Drinking With…, which you can check out embedded below. And, I would say that it’s actually not good. But, that’s completely beside the point.

Summer Catch is as visually summer time as it gets. Like I said, a lot of mowing lawns, Jessica Biel is in a bikini, they’re playing baseball and you get plenty of shots with those field lights on with a sunset going behind it, there’s a lot of beer-drinkin’ which is an A+++ summer time activity. People are sweaty an awful lot. It touches on the old “summer fling” trope. I mean, we’re really hitting the highlights. I don’t want to call Summer Catch an atmospheric movie because that’s being way entirely too generous – I don’t want y’all thinking this is going to be like Sleepy Hollow or something. But, it hits all the right notes from an aesthetic standpoint.

I try to watch it every summer, though it’s old and wasn’t really a hit, so it can be hard to find on streaming platforms. All I’m saying is give it a shot and tell me this movie doesn’t scream “SUMMER TIME!”
