Derrick Henry is the epitome of a force to be reckoned with. With a seemingly endless supply of strength and energy, Alabama’s premier running back bludgeons opposing defenses like few have shown an ability to do before him.
In his 3rd season, Henry has amassed 1,986 yards and a staggering 23 touchdowns. It’s not just his stat line that makes him the ideal candidate to win the 2015 Heisman Trophy – it’s the context these stats take place within.
Henry has at least one touchdown in 18 straight games, 21 touchdowns in his last 24 games. He finished the season with 200+ yards in four of his final seven performances, and has seven multiple-touchdown games on the year. Against Auburn and Florida, he recorded 46 and 44 carries respectively.
The 1,986 yards he’s rushed for this season put him atop the list of Crimson Tide rushers for most yards in a single season. He’s more than 300 yards ahead of 2nd place (Trent Richardson, 2011). Should he elect to return to Alabama in 2016, he will completely shatter Shaun Alexander’s mark of 3,565 career rushing yards. Henry is currently 3rd on that list with 3,358 career yards.
Trent Richardson’s record of 21 touchdowns in a single season is yet another casualty of Henry’s tremendous 2015 campaign. Should Alabama defeat Michigan State and play a second bowl game, Mark Ingram’s record of 42 career touchdowns is in jeopardy.
Henry has made a compelling argument for the greatest rushing season in Alabama history – but that’s just one school. Lest we forget, 13 other programs exist in the SEC, and guess what! Henry is dominating those record books, too.
The bruising back has tied the record for most rushing touchdowns in a season, and now has the most rushing yards in a season in SEC history.
That’s all well and good, but besides that – just look at the eye test. Henry is like a giant running middle finger through every defense he faces. He runs so hard that I hypothesize that the Earth begins to rotate faster with each thunderous step he takes.
Trying to tackle Henry alone is an insult in and of itself. You need at least two more of your boys to bring down this behemoth. Once a defense has weathered the storm that is Derrick freaking Henry, it’s hard to tell what is smeared on their pants – mud or their own feces.
It’s maniacal to think that Christian McCaffrey should win this award based on all-purpose yards. If Henry was returning punts and kicks, he would shit on 3,000 yards. I wouldn’t be surprised if he topped the 5,000-yard mark. DeShaun Watson? He’s had a cute little season – but GTFO.
Derrick Henry is college football’s king.
