Thursday Thoughts: Ryan Lochte & Unrealistic Comic Book Bodies Edition

What follows will simply be a collection of random thoughts, opinions, suggestions, criticisms, etc. Let’s get after it…

Rubber Rooster:

Have you guys ever seen that “if male comic book characters were drawn like female comic book characters” complaint? Am I the only one who thinks it’s incredibly stupid?

Male comic book characters are ALREADY drawn to unrealistic standards, except for maybe Spider-Man (who are we kidding, this is America). They are already the sexualized equivalent to their female counterparts. They are tall, extremely muscular, have strong jaws, perfect hair, piercing eyes, etc. They have the qualities that are attractive to women.

I don’t want my men popping out their asses or showing off their impressive flexibility because those aren’t male power poses. I don’t want my men with breast window costumes or their leotards up their butt-crack. Maybe it’s just me, but a dude’s big donk or flexibility isn’t what impresses me. It’s his chest, shoulders, thighs, and arms that I’m paying attention to. I want a strong guy that’s going to… well, hold on, I shouldn’t get so carried away.

The point is, both genders are drawn in ways that appeal to the opposite sex. It’s pretty simple. There are plenty of sexist things to complain about with comic books, but I can’t say this is one of them. Everyone has an unrealistic body in comic books. Just please stop drawing these sexy dudes in ridiculous female poses to prove a point. Because ladies – aren’t you attracted to Jason Momoa, Chris Hemsworth, and Henry Cavill? Alright, now do you want them in submissive poses with their toes pointed and their hips pushed back? Maybe you do, but personally I’d rather their feet be firmly planted and their chests up with pride while giving me a slightly angry look. Like the dude just saved the city and is ready to pin me down and [ahem].

I don’t know, maybe that’s just me. But they’re not getting ugly men to play these guys in movies. And I’ll admit, I might actually go see Justice League just for Jason Momoa.

Stoney Keeley (@StoneyKeeley):

The supposed mugging story of the United States men’s swimming team is getting out of hand. Apparently now, it’s all a total lie. But, let’s ask Ryan Lochte what happened to begin with…

“And then, the guy pulled out his gun, cocked it, put it up to my forehead, and said, ‘get down,’ and I put my hands up, I was like ‘Whatever.'”

That’s an actual quote from Lochte. That was his reported reaction to being mugged, and we all fell for it. Why? Because every person that has heard Lochte string together a collection of at least two words can tell immediately that he is the special type of braindead that will respond to a gun being pointed at his head with ‘whatever’. Fucking idiot.

He certainly didn’t waste any time getting out of dodge, either. When Rio police requested he remain in town throughout the investigation, guess what – he was already back in America. The three guys that were with him? They were still in town.

Who are these people? Why did they think this was a good idea? They just assumed because of all the chaos going on in Rio, they could say whatever they wanted to. Good for Rio police for sniffing out the bullshit and calling their bluff. I get it – they’re tired of being the world’s punching bag and want to show us that there are law enforcement officers down there that care. This is a huge win for Rio at a time when they’re enduring a lot of losses. A looooooooooot of losses.

The split second Lochte’s three teammates were presented with staying in a Brazilian jail, they were probably like, “YEP WE LIED. SORRY. WE ACTUALLY GOT IN A BRAWL WITH A GAS STATION ATTENDANT. DON’T SEND US TO JAIL.”

The internet is obviously having some fun with it. “Lochte’s fastest time was getting out of Brazil.” That wins. Hands down – I’m cracking up. I’m also entertained by the theory that Lochte used his perceived stupidity to orchestrate this whole thing. Conspiracies will pop up for anything – gotta love it.

So, Ryan – what is your response to all of this?
