Whew – on the brink of disaster after a terrible week two, your boy was able to mend the damage and get back to a winning record on the season. This football thing is pretty tricky. I’m beginning to understand why Las Vegas makes so much money…..aaaannd the guys passing out ‘for entertainment purposes only’ cards at bus stops. Anyway, let’s hop to it!
Where I nailed it: Bill and I have been on the Texas A&M bandwagon all season. They’re the #2 team in the SEC right now. South Carolina covered a 3-point spread against East Carolina. Dallas +3? How about they win it outright? Philadelphia is a much improved team, but I’m still not ready to put any money on ’em. Their first real test comes this week when the Eagles square off against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Where I missed: LOL Georgia. LOL Seattle. “Still, the Commodores defense is respectable enough to keep them in this game.” LOL Vanderbilt.
There are a lot of tough plays out there this weekend with some great games. I actually couldn’t split this up between five picks and five interesting lines, so guess what! You’re getting two weeks in a row of six picks! BOOM!
Stoney’s Picks
NCAAF: Michigan State -5.5 vs. Wisconsin: This is going to be a classic Big Ten smash mouth kind of game. Still, I love the Spartans here. I’m still not sold on the Badgers being Big Ten contenders, and Mark Dantonio can do no wrong. This could be one of those 13-7 slugfests, but hey guess what – that would mean a cover at -5.5. Trust in Sparty.
NFL: Pittsburgh -3.5 @ Philadelphia: After wins over Cleveland and Chicago, is anyone really ready to buy into the Eagles just yet? I’m not. Not with a prolific Steelers offense on deck. Carson Wentz is doing a fine job, but let’s not overhype this Eagles team until they beat a worthwhile opponent. As evidenced with this pick, I don’t think that victory comes this week.
NFL: Los Angeles-Tampa Bay, Under 42: Stealing money….absolutely stealing money. Have you seen the Los Angeles offense this season? It ain’t pretty. Tampa Bay could score 35 and this may still hit the under. This is a 17-14 or 14-9 type of game.
NCAAF: Arkansas-Texas A&M, Under 49: Unlike the aforementioned LA-TB game, this contest won’t hit the under because of an inept offense. No, this is going to be a classic defensive battle. I think A&M is the better team, but under 49 is the better value if you’re betting. I’ll be surprised if this game gets to 27-20. Look for a surprising 20-17 finish.
NCAAF: South Carolina +2.5 @ Kentucky: Is it safe to say Mark Stoops’ career at Kentucky is on life support? They’ve looked plain awful. I said before the season that I’m not buying South Carolina being the 3-win team the media is making them out to be. Win #3 comes this weekend after staving off East Carolina last week and stealing one from Vanderbilt in the season opener.
NCAAF: Army -14 @ Buffalo: Your bonus pick of the week, just because I love that Army is steamrolling people en route to a 3-0 record with a bowl game in sight. This week should be no different as a struggling, 0-2 Buffalo is on their plate. The Bulls are downright atrocious.
Interesting lines
NFL: Washington-New York Giants, Over/Under 46 – Do we know who the Giants really are yet? The defense has appeared to be everything the major free agent investments suggested it’d be. Meanwhile, the Redskins seem on the brink of complete disarray. Still, gut feeling says this could be one of those weird games when both teams hit 30+.
NFL: Cincinnati -3 vs. Denver – Do my eyes deceive me? Is this a desperate effort to get money in on Denver because Cincinnati is going to win by 10? Vegas, your mind tricks are messing with me.
NCAAF: Colorado +10.5 @ Oregon – This ain’t your mama’s Buffs team! They won big over Colorado State and hung in there with Michigan for the better part of the game. I like ’em +10.5 here against an Oregon team that seems weaker than in recent seasons.
NFL: Seattle -9.5 vs. San Francisco – The Niners look tough. I thought they had a legitimate shot to be the worst team in the NFL this season and that doesn’t seem right after two games. -9.5 is a massive spread in the NFL…much less for an offense struggling as mightily as Seattle’s is right now. Interesting, but I wouldn’t touch this line with a 10-foot pole.
’til next week – you stay classy, degenerate gamblers.
Last Week: 4-2
On The Season: 9-7
